Can't Start kde ($DISPLAY isnt set/can't connect to X server

My apologies for the abridged title, I wanted to get the full error message in. I recently installed gentoo on my PC, and it installed fine, but when I compiled kde and tried to run it (# startkde), I received the following error:

$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server

I've googled it, but I haven't found anything thus far and I don't know what to do.

Listhen to me, I tried this problem in Ubuntu simply was adding command "sudo apt-get install xinit", after I run "sudo startx" and my KDE has run.

Yeah, you know what? that answer is completely meaningless to me. what the hell is that syntax because it shows up as non UTF or non english character. i have to read this in term because i have no desktop...

monicajae,

Not sure if you're referring to the à (it's an a with a ` (grave accent) on top of it).

Anyblue, the advice I guess might work globally, but as far as I understand, the more common and perhaps appropriate way to set exec startkde is at the user's home path, in the file:

Code: Select all

~/.xinitrc
As for the comment from Ubuntu, that's a bad idea. No, we do not run 'sudo startx', and neither should you, be you a bot or not. ^^;
Kindest of regardses.
