Hey all,

Can't remember if I've already posted something similar to this, but I'm experiencing a massive lag when accessing http://forums.gentoo.org (Edit: This should be https!) in Opera.

It seems fine in Firefox, and http://forums.gentoo.org (Edit: This should be http!) also works okay.

I've logged a report with Opera, as it seems to be something related to CACert SSL in general, but can anyone else try loading both the http and https forums.gentoo.org in some browsers to see if they also experience a major difference in load times so I can find out whether it's actually just my system?

Edit: It appears the damned forum software is re-writing my URLs to be http or https depending on whether the user is accessing the forums via https or http so the above links are appearing the same, even tho' they are written different in the source!
Even tried [url] tags but it is ignoring the http/https and even re-writing them!! :(

We do sometimes have problems with pages loading that can cause slowness, this usually lasts for a few minutes before going back to normal so make sure that you do your testing in parallel to rule this out. Also what version of Opera are you using? and does it happen with other sites CACert certificates?

I added this because it would log you out if you clicked on an http forums link when using https and vice versa.

I tried it with both tabs side-by-side (I do love Opera's MDI mode :D) and can reload the http version like, 15 times in the time it takes the https to load. :lol:
Other CACert sites display a very long initial load time, but once cached it's not too bad. FGO is particularly bad, probably due to the dynamic nature of the pages; Sometimes, I can hit F5/Refresh on the front page and end up waiting another minute for it to load each time :(
It's most punishing where there are many elements on the page; Just hitting reply here, I was watching it slowly load all the smileys one-by-one! :eek: :lol: (Each time it would display "Setting up secure connection..." in the status bar)

Browser is v10.62 (Build 6438)

Ah, this is something a dumb user like me wouldn't have even considered!
'tis a good reason for the behaviour ;)

I can't replicate the problem as consistently with sites that use certs which are bundled with Opera, but I have seen it now and then. It is much more pronounced with CACert-using sites tho'. I have a gut feeling it's a bug with Opera's revocation checking but don't know how to test this theory...

Aww c'mon dudes, I only wanted to know your browser and the rough load times (All images and elements loaded, spinny thing no longer spinnying etc. :)) of the http and https versions of forums.gentoo.org!

Something like:

Opera v10.62 (Build 6438) (UA=Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686; U; en-GB) Presto/2.6.30 Version/10.62)
https = 1:29
http = 0:06

www-client/opera-10.61: http: 2.07s; https: 5.74s.
www-client/firefox-3.6.9-r1: http: 2.57s; https: 6.84s.
Code:
IPSN-JOHNGRAH2 ~ # grep "model name" /proc/cpuinfo
model name      : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
model name      : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Curiously enough, the very first time I loaded the page in Opera (http), it took a couple of minutes. Firefox was not showing any appreciable lag while this was going on.

Huh, you got the minute-load the first time you loaded it on http? As in non-SSL?!

Can you duplicate that if you clear the cache? May have been a DNS lag I suppose...

Argh!! Why are computers never consistent!?

actually I just noticed this myself
https has always been a touch slower, but not to this extent

It's fine on my linux machines, but on the Win7 laptop, once I installed their root and intermediate certs, down in the status bit bottom left, it quasi-hangs saying "Establishing Secure Connection..."

Don't remember it happening before I added cacert's root/intermediate certs to store.

That's about as close as I can come to pinpointing, and it may well be a red herring on my end.

Well, I deleted ALL CACert certificates from Opera and, aside from the initial unsigned cert warning, https fgp now loads as fast as http!

So it would seem the problem is between opera and cacert's certs after all!

It's not fixed in latest operas or updated cacerts so I think I'll be stuck using it unsigned for a while... :(

not just Opera, this happened for me with Chrome on Windows and Linux.

I don't understand it either. But hey, I'm glad I was partially right for once!
