stating darkstarbyte's situation: He has a working grub2 on his primary boot disk.
He needs to add a menu entry to the grub2 mess to boot the secondary disk that contains gentoo.
He states that his bios does not recognize the secondary disk as bootable.
Unless BIOS recognizes the secondary drive as bootable any attempt to use (hd1) in any type of grub is doomed to fail.
As he has not reported any results of:
Quote:
boot ubuntu,
Code:

sudo su --
fdisk /dev/sdb
a
1
w
reboot

enter BIOS and determine if the secondary drive shows up as a bootable drive.

It must be presumed that the secondary drive remains unreconized as bootable.
In such case the kernel and inirtd will need to be copied to the ubuntu (primary) boot drive and the grub2 menu entry created, presumably by update-grub in ubuntu.

to enter chroot from gentoo cd:
Code:
mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"

clarify the language: does the pata drive show up in the bios list of bootable drives? This is a different question from "Can you boot the pata drive?" Have you done
Quote:
boot ubuntu
Code:
sudo su --
fdisk /dev/sdb
a
1
w
reboot

look in bios to see if the pata drive is present

you did not mess up your bios.
get a digital camera
start a reboot, enter bios, set the pata drive as first to boot, when the crash occurs, take a picture, paste it at your favorite free photo site, post the url here

logical syllogism:
you can boot ubuntu
if you can only boot the sata drive
then ubuntu is on the sata drive
