Hi, all.

I have just tried to install Gentoo on my computer with FC8 installed. I used LVM to hold my main partitions except partition of /boot. I have installed gentoo on Qemu successfully before with plain IDE harddisk, so I want to install it on a partition rooting on LVM .
I use the host environment of FC8 to complete the installation process.
Here is my disk layout

NOTE: I also have some partitions used by Windows XP, but they do not affect my installation and I will not mention them in the following.

As shown above, the type of interface of my hard disk is SATA and the root partition resides on LVM, so I need sata driver and lvm driver. I did include them in the kernel as module and the compilation proceeds smoothly. I use genkernel to generate the initramfs which will help loading the sata and lvm module. However, when I tried to boot the new kernel, it freezed at the place showing "scanning sd_mod ...".
Then I modified the grub parameters passd to the kernel as the following:

where I added "noscsi" to disable the loading to sd_mod.
After doing this, I can successfully passing the module scanning phase, but the kernel still cannot mount the /dev/VolGroup00/gentoo_root.
And I tried vgscan in the shell of ramfs to scan VG, but nothing is discoverd. I believed this is because the interface of my hard disk is SATA, which needs sd_mod, and I didn't load sd_mod resulting in that vgscan cannot scan out the VG.
Therefore, I tried modprobe sd_mod in the shell of ramfs and the same result appeared -- freezing the kernel.
I googled some stuff in the forum, and tried to disable ATA/IDE drivers in the kernel. But it didn't help.
I tried udevinfo -a -p /sys/block/sda | grep DRIVERS under FC8, and it gave output as follow:

Who can figure out what's wrong with sd_mod? How can I fix this problem?

Actually I modified the genkernel.conf to make oldconfig and menuconfig default settings, so

genkernel --oldconfig --menuconfig --clean --mrproper --lvm all
is my invocation of genkernel.

Do you mean to compile the drivers as built-in and exclude other irrelevant drivers? To some degree, I believe the built-in and modular method will not affect the result.
But anyway, I will give it a try later.

PS: An question about the code quotation. How can I copy the output of "make menuconfig" out like this:

I think it means some progress but still cannot boot.
What's wrong with this configuration?

PS: Sorry for some omissions in the output of the kernel, because I wrote it down by pen. Is there any way to log the kernel's booting output under such situations?

I don't think it matters, but I don't think you need ahci. reference sata_ahci --> ck804 shows nil
I'd recommend disabling or disconnecting the cdrom (in fact any other drives) and seeing if a boot results.
A jpeg of a kernel crash (or hang) can be helpful.
What choices exist in the BIOS for the hard drive adapter?

Good news. After changing the configuration of BIOS, gentoo successfully boot up!
Thank for your hint, DONAHUE.

I have tried different configurations.
  1. under integrated peripheral menu of BIOS, the default setting of SATA controller is "all enabled".
  2. switch SATA controller to "SATA-1".

Under configuration 1, at the BIOS check screen, it will show 2 more IDE channels. Gentoo will enter a dead loop and hang there as shown above.
Under configuration 2, gentoo will easily pass the hardware check and successfully boot up. :D
Although it's exciting, I want to figure out what's going on with config 1. Is there any hint?

Good work. All I had was a vague memory of intel and nvidia using some very unhelpful names for mode settings of hard drive adapters a couple of years ago. I remember having to play with them to find one that worked.
