I guess you already checked games-strategy/*
Majesty looks very promising, although it's commercial. I fear, there aren't too many good RTS games for Linux right now :(

Freeciv is the only decent free strategy game I've found. There are lots of less visual, more "strategic" games like Advanced Strategic Command, but they're not to my taste.

Majesty is pretty cool tho :)

Kohan is IMO the best RTS for Linux.
Not that there is much choice, but it's really good anyway. Majesty is interesting but I haven't picked up a full copy yet to decide if it's better. Of course neither are free, there are a number of good free TBS', but no good free RTS'. As far as TBS goes though, you can't beat Andrew Henderson's Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

FreeCraft is good.
Whatever happened to them after the Blizzard kids trapped them in their locker and took away their lunch money?

Majesty is fun, a sort of "passive" RTS :)

Sorry... but Freeciv (as any Civ game) is one of the less exposed games to age. It plays quite good after more than 10 years that Sid Meier created the concept.

Regards!

quake 3 is the best strategy game around imo.
You can just feel the strategy radiating out of it.

Unfortunately, the version TransGaming sells is not native. The Loki version is, but since they went out of business the game wasn't able to be patched up. You can search through the LinuxGames.com archives for information regarding what happened with all that.

Linux seems to be very lacking in real time and turn based stratagy games. I wish linux had something like Empire Earth. That is really the only Windows game I miss and I couldn't get it to wine after the installer.

Anyway... There is always Freecraft and it's many forks ;)

Warcraft iii runs great under winex (winex can kiss my 455 after the tantrum they through... I had purchased a subscription from transgamiung before and cancelled it immediately after that little event).

Ack, that quote just pissed me off.

Open your eyes. There's Boson to satisfy your RTS whims.

Then for TBS, I'll dup one of my posts in another thread:

Crimson Fields - looks promising (in portage)

Advanced Strategic Command - remember Battle Isle? (in portage)
[img:98d97acd25]http://www.happypenguin.org/images/thumbs/asc.jpg[/img:98d97acd25]

Xconq - very mature and complex (not in portage)
[img:98d97acd25]http://www.happypenguin.org/images/thumbs/xconq.jpg[/img:98d97acd25]

They are a few of many. Go to happypenguin.org and browse to find some real gems.

The truth is, we're spoilt when it comes to free games.

Boson looks promising, but its two-player only and still very alpha. Can anyone point out a single free RTS out there that is stable?

Yes, try Freecraft (emerge freecraft) - which is currently being rebranded as Stratagus - and the Freecraft Media Project (emerge freecraft-fcmp) - which is currently being rebranded as Aleona's Tales.
