I've downloaded the too athlon XP GRP discs from linuxiso.org.
After a couple trys, I understood how to install Gentoo Linux 1.4. Then I tried my first emerge...as you can imagine it was Xfree

USE="bindlist" emerge -k xfree

For the xfree, it had to download files from the net? Whats up with that? Shouldnt this stuff be in the referenc e platform. I have no problem with downloads, but it takes a shit load of time over dialup. After running xf86config, and setting up my mouse, i was able to take a peek at tvm. Uck. Gnome 2.2 here we go.

I was told in my install quide to use pretty this command to install things such as gnome...

USE="bindlist" emerge -k gnome

And I thought that the reason I had to download a couple things from xfree's emerge was because I didnt have the tbz2(or whatever that extenstion was) files from both 'package' directorys on both CD's. Copying those to my PKGDIR (package direcotry) I urinated and ran the above command; HALF OF THE PACKAGES NEEDD TO BE DOWNLOADED! WHATDJ YOU TALKING BOUT GENTOO?! Now that I think of it that one or two packages from xfree werent yet copied from one of the cd's (msot likly cd 2) - and the reason why pretty much HALF OF gnome needed to be downloaded was because you guys support KDE (which sucks) But it might be possibly that I'm doing something wrong. Some of the most basic packeges such as Gnome Terminal needed to be downloaded! (And compikling that package failed- so I gave up and resorted to this post) What am I doing wrong?

I think I worded this post right, if you need further elaboration, please ask.

Thank you.

as far as i understand GRP installs (done a couple of them myself) "emerge -k package" basically looks if the version it wants to install is available as binary or not. if you do a fresh install, copy the portage tree from the cd onto your hd and then do "emerge -k" everything should go well. but if you do "emerge sync" and then try to "emerge -k", portage will want the newer versions it got aware of because of the sync, and since these are not on your binary cd, it will fetch them from the internet...

i hope this is correct, this is so far what i observed during my couple of installs. and i hope it helps you.

If you follow the procedure from above (copying distfiles from cd) but have already sync'd you could try an 'emerge -K foo' which is the switch for "package only". If that doesn't work, you could also navigate to the directory where the ebuild of the package you want is (i.e. /usr/portage/gnome-base). In there you will find all .ebuilds for that package. Than check the version of the bin you have in your distfiles and explicitly emerge the .ebuild for that version.

Ex: if most recent package is foo-1.5.ebuild and the bin you have is 1.3 than type: emerge -K foo-1.3.ebuild

One more, if you go somewhere where there is free broadband internet...Library, coffe shop, etc. You could drink a cup of coffee and do a bunch of 'emerge -f foo' so you could get all the packages on your drive. Than go home and compile away :)
