When I try to update world:

# emerge --update --deep --newuse world -pv

I get an empty list of packages to update, but there is one:

[U] x11-misc/util-macros
Available versions: 1.5.0 1.6.1 ~1.7.0 1.8.0
Installed versions: 1.6.1(12.04.10 13:19)

Shouldn't emerge find it?

'--with-bdeps y' should give you that.
