The doctor who first suggested a link between MMR vaccinations and autism is to be struck off the medical register.

The General Medical Council found Dr Andrew Wakefield guilty of serious professional misconduct over the way he carried out his controversial research.

It follows a GMC ruling earlier this year that he had acted unethically.

GOOD!
My wife has to read such papers for her job and she explained what his "research" was based around (which was a complete farce). This man alone created enough hysteria with his FUD that the herd immunity levels dropped to dangerous levels

The big question is why did this take so long?

Striking someone off the medical register seems to be a harsh punishment IMO.
So the people responsible for this should take their time considering whether or not to do so.

Now that they have looked through everything and found it was really "professional misconduct" → off with his head.

Well, keeping him on the register allows him to just do the same stuff all over again.

They ain't keeping him.
All I'm saying is they should be really sure before striking him off. Since it has taken some time for the council to reach that decision I gather they examined the case from every direction and now are as sure as they can get.

I don't know much about the case, but imagine you were a doctor and got stricken off the register (with the same amount of publicity).
Even if the decision was revoked later (because you were right (with whatever) after all), the damages to your reputation (and thus your income) would be enormous.

Is there anyway we can punish idiot celebrities like Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy who campaigned against MMR vaccines? I propose a multi million dollar fine that goes to an international immunization fund.

And the panel hearing the case took exception with the way he gathered blood samples. Dr Wakefield paid children £5 for the samples at his son's birthday party.

I couldn't stop laughing for half an hour after reading this.

There's still a) a lot of people that spout this nonsense as an excuse to avoid vaccinating their child and b) people on this forum who appear to believe it's true. I have a Nigerian Prince's email address for people like that, they may be smart but sometimes smart people act really dumb.
