|
|
I have been very successful in installing gentoo on my Mini 311 and am trying to get the web cam working I have been using a gentoo wiki written for the 311 but when I run the command to bring up the camera I receive a file not found error I checked a gentoo wiki on web cams and it tells me that I should have a /dev/v4l/mycamera file I don't even have a /dev/v4l directory any help would be appreciated. I would also add I have mplayer installed and that is what I am trying to use to bring up the camera _________________ And to think my decision to get a degree in computer science started

I'm guessing http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/HP_mini_311#Webcam is what you found - make sure you follow the kernel related steps (and make sure you're booting from the new kernel you compile, it's common to forget to copy the new kernel to /boot) |

I thank you for your reply I am using kernel 2.6.32-gentoo-r7 I have checked the kernel settings and my grub.conf file but the output of the command:
mplayer -fps 15 tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:/dev/video0
is
Option tv: Unknown suboption /dev/video0
Error parsing option on the command line: -tv
MPlayer SVN-r29796-4.4.3 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
the command v4l-info returns
open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
when I create the directory /dev/video0
v4l-info returns
/dev/video0: not an video4linux device
If you or anyone can see where I have made a mistake I would be grateful along with any other help
I need to add dmesg shows:
Product: HP Webcam-50
Manufacture: Image Processor _________________ And to think my decision to get a degree in computer science started

You don't want to create /dev/video0 as a directory, udev should create it once the kernel loads the driver for it.
Does dmesg show anything else related to the webcam or v4l? |

I have checked the kernel more then once; I also checked to see that I had copied it correctly I built the modules into the kernel as was done in the wiki; I also reinstalled udev still no luck when I use lsusb I do not see the camera and dmesg does not show any thing related to v4l. I am going to let it rest for a while maybe a fresh brain will help Thanks for your help _________________ And to think my decision to get a degree in computer science started

I was correct sleep is a wonderful thing. I had missed one of the kernel settings listed, I added it, recompiled the kernel, copied it to the /boot directory, rebooted, and damn if there wasn't an old gray haired guy looking at me. Thanks again BradN for the help and to all who looked at this post _________________ And to think my decision to get a degree in computer science started
