Hi Guys,
Recently while helping a friend i saw that in firefox default homepage is set as http://start.ubuntu.com/9.10/

Searching shows google adds at the top.

Why doesn't gentoo do the same. It'll surely generate some revenue which will help in development.
I guess there is a good user base so why not use it to advantage.

Thanks
Gaurav

Simple, not everyone installs Firefox.

Other browsers I've used under Gentoo include...

galeon
lynx
links
opera

Have a poke around /usr/portage/www-client to see what others there are.

Besides which, the first thing I do after installing Firefox anywhere is to change the default homepage :)

Also i wont chnage the homepage if i know it's benefiting the gentoo community financially.

We have a policy of not doing customizations. You get vanilla firefox, vanilla kde, vanilla gnome. We don't add Gentoo icons and wallpapers. That being said, there is nothing wrong with offering optional customizations, that users can choose to install on top of the vanilla packages we offer.

We could make a Gentoo start page, and people who want to use it could then choose to make it their homepage.

Lack of manpower. This is both the reason why this hasn't happened and also the only real cause of development issues in Gentoo.

The money from such a scheme won't solve the manpower issues, thus it's not worth it.

hi,

i aggree that this wouldn't solve the manpower issue.
BUT as i had to take a closer look at karmic, i think they did a very good job on the overall default design. I find it quite appealing, and people might identify themself a bit more with gentoo ('corporate identity'-wise).

The problem with an overall design for Gentoo is manpower. With binary distros, it's easy - you've got one version (of one primary desktop environment). With Gentoo, you've got every current version of every desktop environment. And minor updates might require fixes to the theming. I feel I have plenty of choice with the standard available themes for my desktop environment in the tree.

I'd much rather time was spent on real bugs and speedy release of new versions (Gentoo's KDE 4.3.4 release announcement hit my feeds before KDEs did!)

With respect to branding, I think it's also because Gentoo appeals more to hardcore geeks, and less to artistic types. And there are apparently no people that care enough. If you feel up to it, feel free to start putting together some branding. And if it's of sufficient quality, we devs will make it available in portage. That's the way things happen around here. We're a completely volunteer organization. If you think you can contribute, you are very welcome.

I was unaware of this that there is revenue generation by using google search in desktop apps. I heard that google adsense doesn't allow that. Do you mean any official contract ?

AKA: With respect to branding, I think it's also because Gentoo appeals more to people that fail miserably whenever they wanna get laid, and less to ex windows pussies.

When I installed Gnome, it'd definitely been "branded", much to my surprise.
