Main issue is I have no sound, not a deal breaker, I run sound from another box usually.
While trying to fix this, I have recompiled a kernel 3 times with no joy, am running a genkernel at this time with no luck. The sound does work otb with the gentoo 10.1 live dvd.
I have a basic Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04)
Nothing fancy, I have followed the gentoo wiki alsa guide, everything I can find on the forum etc... I have been working at this for longer then I care to claim.
I finally found a something and do not know what to do with it.
When I run
box genfool # /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
bash: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf: Permission denied
I am confused, at this point...I can start midnight commander at a root terminal and edit the file.
That file is fine I think, Is not the cure to my sound issue. Butt the weird permission problem may be.
I really have no clue at what to look for at this point, I cant find any errors with alsa or dmesg???
Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Are you trying to "run" the config file? The config file is for configuring, it's not an executable and hence it's denying (it's not +x nor should it be). It's used to generate the system modprobe config file, where 'update-modules' does the trick... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Thank you, eccerr0r for setting me straight.
I knew instantly when I read your post, that you were correct.
Think I was grasping at straws, I seen the permission error and thought, ahha, this must be the problem. I have been fighting sound for two weeks, and could not find the error.
I have an extra sound card, the exact same card....I swapped them out today and rebooted....works perfect now, seems I had a hardware issue. |
