phoen1x if you have à stable ati.you have to have à package.mask
if you dont xorg wont start (you got to new xorg stuff)

adding the gentoo-quebec overlay, adding ATI to the video_cards list, emerging ati-driver and xf86-video-ati, modifying xorg.conf to use fglrx instead of radeonhd worked great.

Hopefully this fixes the problem I have every morning where the screen blacks out for a minute or so and the display comes out semi-corrupted requiring an 'x' restart.

I tried installing the 10.4 catalyst drivers on a clean system and ran into a problem:

xextproto doesn't have the XTest.h and record.h files in it anymore (version 7.1.1). Downgrading really wasn't an option as xorg-server 1.7.6 wanted the latest version of xextproto, so to get it to work, I had to install the libXtst package.

In the end, I'm installing xorg-x11 instead of just xorg-server. With any luck that'll clean up any other dependency problems.

Hope this helps someone else, as it caused me to bash my head against the desk for a couple hours.

there is 2 things i am using in the kernel to fix fglrx.one is in the kernel hack and one is in pci ... i cant give you it now (my bash cracked yesterday =newinstall)
and doing the hard thing to start fglrx again at the moment .i have not get the resolution note in compiz-manager that you have but every els is ok
to fix my dual monitors i got the xorg.conf from ati-10.2 and to do that i comp... xorg with USE="+xinerama" set it off in xorg.conf (that should do it)

have you comp..... compiz-fusion with backend= gnome kde or stand alone?
what flags are you using for it

i post my kernel conf as fast as i kan

ps: have you tryed the workaround for compiz

hedmo, could you please post the output of "cat /proc/mtrr" ?
And does your dmesg contain at the beginning some info, denoting that the kernel is trying to fix sth. up?
Mine shows e.g. :
"Phoenix BIOS detected: BIOS may corrupt low RAM, working around it"
in a related thread on the debian ML there was sth. like this:
"mtrr: your BIOS has set up an incorrect mask, fixing it up."
