I made a stage4.tar.bz2 with :
Code:
tar cvjf /media/sda4/stage4.tar.bz2 / -X stage4.excl

The exclusion file only excludes
Quote:
/root/.local/share/Trash/*

It packed everything up until it reached /usr/ksomething and then just stopped.
It didn't return the terminal, it did create the 1.5 GB archive on the storage partition (sda4).
Xarchive just sits busy when I try to open it.
Am I missing something?

it looks like your /media/sda4 ran out of room. 1.5G may not be anywhere near big enough.
Look at the output of df -h to get a ballpark idea of the space your installation uses.

Maybe you need to exlude this too : stage4.tar.bz2

Code:
ric@localhost ~ $ df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3              29G  9.3G   19G  34% /
udev                   10M  184K  9.9M   2% /dev
/dev/sda2             106G   43G   63G  41% /media/windows
/dev/sda4             455G   36G  396G   9% /media/sda4
shm                   2.8G     0  2.8G   0% /dev/shm

Thanks, but sda4 has plenty of room.

Thats an important thing to do. But to make sure I wasn't packing the package into itself, I put it on a different partition; sda4. ( I'm working from sda3)

It was my bad.
I was trying to include everything possible. ( I previously excluded /dev , and regretted doing so.)
/proc must be excluded. It doesn't contain files, just virtual files, created as needed.
Adding /proc/* to the exclusion file allowed me to finish. :)

For future backups, you might want to have a look at blinkeye's script. I find it works very well.

With regard to /dev, on most systems you only need /dev/null and /dev/console. (They are included in the stage4 tarball if you use blinkeye's script.)

Here is another link for your perusal:

http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Custom_Stage4

A link to blinkeye's script is included in the Credits section there.

Making a stage4 is pretty basic, ( says me, who just messed it up ;) ) but Blinkeyes script looks really good. I may use it in the future.
