I like Gentoo very much, but I'm bored about compling time.
Too much compiling often costs much time, and makes my laptop hot. So here is my way to upgrade my Gentoo:
I use emerge --sync every one or two days. But I don't upgrade until I find I need some new function or I receive the message about problem of security after sync.
Is it a good way? And do you guys have some suggestions?
Thanks in advance. |

Here is my opinion on that subject:
Doing it that way can, after time, make it difficult to update your system without some/much difficulties, and can make your system gradually more and more inconsistent.
The best way to stay out of trouble is to use a stable Gentoo, and always keep it very up-to-date.
What I do is run the following during my morning coffee every day:emerge --sync (or eix-sync)
emerge -aDNuv world
etc-update (if needed)
emerge --depclean -av
revdep-rebuild
The benefits are that my systems are always running perfectly, there are no problems updating, and it generally only takes a few minutes, unless there is a full KDE update, or some other big stuff.
Yes Gentoo is a good source of heat.
That's why it's so popular in more northern countries - especially in winter, it seems as if there is never enough to update. |

Also, you can run this :
| Code: |
# eclean-dist -id
# lafilefixer --justfixit

I --sync and update when I have some time ( once a week) because sometimes something breaks. Usually I can fix it... but it takes time. Maybe it's because I'm using ~amd64. _________________ My printer has strange colors |

Using ~arch and having some bugs is part of the deal. _________________ Sysadmin of Funtoo-Québec.org

Yep, I've been on ~amd64 pretty much my whole time here at Gentoo. Stable is way too boring for me and after I've noticed that I'm just busy unmasking stuff all the time, I made the switch.
I'm syncing pretty much every day or every second day and if there are only small changes, which should jsut go through without problems, I'll immediately emerge them. Otherwise my compile day is Saturday. However, most of the time I'll just kick-start it Friday evening before I go to bed and hunt down potential problems in the morning. My laptop isn't usually as up to date as my desktop, yet it's still running unstable (mostly because I have a slow net connection and I set up a local dist-files mirror, so I don't have to download multiple versions of everything It's supposed to get it's updates Saturday, too, but if I'm not planning on using it in the next week or so I might skip them for a while unless there's something major. |

Well, I do the reverse; every 6 months or so I pick a Portage snapshot, build
it, debug it, and leave it alone until the time comes for an update ... there are
lots of ways to use Gentoo, fortunately.
