Hi everyone,
I am looking for method of enabling keystroke feedback (asterisk) when typing passwords at bash console.
Same during the boot process (luks passphrase - kernel compiled with genkernel)
Are there any reasons (eg security) not to do this.
Search eludes me on this one - issue with keywords
Thanks

It depends on the program you use. For instance, sudo has a "pwfeedback" option.

I suppose with luks you are lost. Without luks, you can store e.g. your "real" password with gpg and pipe it: pinentry-curses also shows stars.

Not really. One might argue that giving away the length of the password somewhat weakens it, but for any real setup this weakening should be close to neglectable. |

Thanks that straightened me out.
I'll be looking at su and sudo docs. For some reason I thought (don't know why) it was a function of bash (and busybox), not the app.
