In case you are unaware, curling is an Olympic event that is nothing but shuffleboard on ice. Shuffleboard is most popular with nonagenarians on cruises and in nursing homes. Why is this an Olympic event?

I turned on CNBC to watch some Olympics this morning and got USA vs Switzerland men's curling. I wanted some hot female figure skating, or maybe some aggressive speed skating... but no, I got Shuffleboard.

It doesn't make any sense to me either. Might as well have winter variants of darts, pool, and bowling too.

Ya instead of curling they need to change things up a bit.....

They can use some Olympic grab ass or Water polo or even a game of come out of the closet. For more info on a list of games visit the wiki link below..

P.S.

I am just joking not trying to offend anyone.

I watched it for the first time for about 2 hours last night. It's excellent.

It's great fun to watch, the icy equivalent of snooker in terms of enjoyment. Only you can't play it in a pub, so they put it in the olympics.

I also watch it sometimes before sleeping, I don't know why but it helps. I am considering vcring some events to be used when I can't sleep ....

PS. Just kidding it is the sport every janitor dreams to compete in as a champion ....

My first time was several Winter Olympics back (pre Nagano I think). It isn't something I'd watch regularly, just like every other Olympic event, so seems a perfect fit.

the winter olympics isn't about pure athleticism like the summer olympics is. Just look at how many judge-based sports there are in the winter vs. the summer. In the summer olympics you win, in the winter olympics, you put on the best show (sans the few sports where there actually is an objective competition).

curling, despite it's not very athletic nature, is an objective competition. get the rock the closest, that's it. so for that I respect it and it should stay. there are no style points or judgements based on the show.

i could do without the snow board half pipe, or the figure skating. the snow board half pipe was the most popular thing at a restaurant last night. wtf, that's not a sport. sure it takes skill and athleticism, but there is no competition. the competition is artificial.

Well so is blackjack, Candyland, poker, Tekken, chess... there is just a difference between games and sports. Curling to me is just like billiards, darts, or shuffleboard. Might be a fun game, but it's a stretch to call them sports.

But figure skating has such amazing potential :P (nsfw)

Why is it artificial just because it isn't one dimensional? If a person gets more height and doesn't look like they're about to fall over, that is clearly more skillful than the person who accomplishes the same general trick but doesn't look as controlled or had to do it with less height to achieve that control. They are simply different sports with different competition. Because a clock or series of LEDs can't tell you who "won" doesn't make it any less so.

I don't think the word "sport" is officially used to describe the Olympics. I see the words "Olympic Games" used to officially describe the events. So if Curling doesn't count as a sport, it doesn't matter as long as it counts as a game :D

Good catch! Let's get rid of the crappy sports and leave the games alone!

And why stop there? Let's put in Olympic Chess and Olympic Billiards!

Let's put in Olympic Starcraft (well, S. Korea pretty much does this) and Olympic Halo!

I'm actually somewhat charmed that for the last couple days it seems that every time I turn on the Olympics I get curling. The British team must be doing really well.

Secretly, I think it's sorta fun to watch, actually, in the background. Good for chatting on the couch and occasionally looking up to say "oh, nice one"; at least you can follow it. Better than, say, luge, where you just get a bunch of pictures of someone going fast and then a number shows up to say who did best.

Luge is pretty uncompelling. By chance I tuned in to Mancuso's downhill run, which I could tell was impressive. Then of course I saw everyone else crash afterward followed by Vonn's run. There was one that didn't crash in between, but she was obviously not doing as well (possibly just trying not to crash:).

I couldn't get interested in the luge, but the skeleton is brilliant to watch and I'm really enjoying it.

It's like the luge except it's head-first on a board similar in design to what you'd use for body surfing.

I LOVE it.

The guys are just amazing and some of the women are really hot (just look up the russian team).
