Does anyone know why nautilus 2.26 in browser mode has stopped remembering
its last window position? It now opens centrally on the desktop with a fixed size,
and there seems no way to change this. There are rumours on Google about
a missing gconf key, but I'd expect that to be part of the installation. Has anyone
else seen this?
Thanks - Will |

That function is part of the window manager (metacity right?). I think you should look in that direction. |

Ok, I've checked a 2.24 installation, and a couple of gconf tags are missing:
/apps/nautilus/preferences/navigation_window_saved_geometry and
../navigation_window_saved_maximized. The gconf editor complains that
these tags have no attached schema, so it looks as if they've been dropped
from Nautilus. Does anyone know why? Is this a part of Gnome 3.0 changes?
I suppose the answer is just to rebuild the Nautilus schemas, but I'd like to know
why these particular settings have been dropped first.

As i tried out Gnome the first time (2.26) i wondered why each closed window on the desktop, doesn't remember its size and position.
I gave it a try, cause in the beginning of kde 4 i hate the changes compared to kde-3.5 at first.
For me this is a must have of a good desktop enviroment / window manager.
After searching how to do this, i found out that this behaviour ist the gnome philosphy.
If you may retrofit this adjustment settings you have to fiddle around with some tools like devilspie or (forgot the name of the 2nd) to create your own rules for position and size of your windows.
It's not a trivial thing, and it should not be 100% stable, so they don't want to implement it in their WM (metacity).
take a look at:
http://live.gnome.org/DevilsPie
or:
http://foosel.org/linux/devilspie
Gnome 3.0 looks more customizable to me, but it should depend on java and css for its themes, which seems to be not a good idea to me.
So i went back to KDE-4, and in the meantime i like it more than any other DE.
Regards, Andy. _________________ If you want to see a Distro done right, compile it yourself! |
