not emerge for me 
ok basically I have been following the steps in the Wiki : http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/E17 and I have followed the instructions closely and also set up /etc/portage/sets/enlightenment-live with the correct sets placed into them.. anyways.. when I ran the following command:

emerge -av @enlightenment-live |
This was the output:

sets # emerge -av @enlightenment-live
!!! '@enlightenment-live' is not a valid package atom.

any ideas on how to resolve this? all help is appreciated! |

To use sets you need sys-apps/portage-2.2
So you would need to get that unmasked and emerged first.
Note that it's both keyword and package masked. |

hmm so for a n00b like me , would it just be easier to just emerge -av enlightenment? |

Seems that way. The wiki describes how to emerge E17 with either portage-2.1 or 2.2
Just skip over the portage-2.2 parts if you wish to stay with portage-2.1 |
