You stop the program, everything else works ok - then its the program, or the program causing a fault within the O/S.
Well, it isn't that simple. The app is the only thing running on the server(s). An idle server rarely shows problems unless they're critical, such as memory.

if they dont fix the problem then the $$$ will be going elsewhere
Well, its internal, so not really.

does your boss trust you when you tell him the developers wont listen and your only choice is to go elsewhere...
The "problem" was above my manager. Essentially the developers not taking ownership of the problem, and nobody making it a priority for them. In their defense, they're naturally working on other things management wanted.

Searching the developers code is usually not the approach to take. Just whittle the problem down to the lowest common denominator. You will always hear developers say it's not my app and sysadmins say it's not my system.
Right... I've no intention of digging into their code as I certainly don't have the expertise to find the problem (frankly, neither do some of them :).

It also takes a manager who is willing to stand up to development and stand their ground when they announce, "It's not the OS or hardware". Pretty rare by my experience.
That wasn't the problem, but come same time the next week, the dev was back asking why the server was so slow (nevermind they were running ~15 instances of the app).

Patching and data center temperature were known issues, though there weren't any missing patches known to have caused problems. I'll need to get better at some of the performance issues you mentioned though.

Thanks.
