I'm having a hard time resolving this circular dependancies issue and I'm at a point to where I am stuck. I am emerging the following packages:
Code:

emerge -av @kdeadmin-4.4 @kdeartwork-4.4 @kdebase-4.4 @kdebindings-4.4
@kdegraphics-4.4 @kdelibs-4.4 @kdemultimedia-4.4 @kdenetwork-4.4 @kdesdk-4.4
@kdeutils-4.4

I then get the following result:
Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It is most likely something with a conflicting package or USE flag. My searches found that the doc flag sometimes causes these errors, but as you can see, that's not enabled here. Also, I've tried to emerge using USE="-doc" and that made no difference. It's probably something obvious I'm missing here. Any assistance would be a huge help.

Thanks.

Disable cups useflag, for the time being.

shaunole,

Try
Code:
USE="-cups" emerge -av @kdeadmin-4.4 @kdeartwork-4.4 @kdebase-4.4 @kdebindings-4.4
@kdegraphics-4.4 @kdelibs-4.4 @kdemultimedia-4.4 @kdenetwork-4.4 @kdesdk-4.4
@kdeutils-4.4

which should install everything without optional cups support, followed by
Code:
emerge -av @kdeadmin-4.4 @kdeartwork-4.4 @kdebase-4.4 @kdebindings-4.4 @kdegraphics-4.4 @kdelibs-4.4 @kdemultimedia-4.4 @kdenetwork-4.4 @kdesdk-4.4
@kdeutils-4.4

I've explicitly set "-gtk" in make.conf and I re-emerged gcc which was the only package with that use flag. The error seems to still persist. I do appreciate your help. Any other guidance is appreciated. :)
Code:

I assume you mean to add -cups to the use flag. This is what happens when I attempt that approach:

Code:

USE="-cups" emerge -av @kdeadmin-4.4 @kdeartwork-4.4 @kdebase-4.4 @kdebindings-4.4 @kdegraphics-4.4 @kdelibs-4.4 @kdemultimedia-4.4   @kdenetwork-4.4 @kdenetwork-4.4 @kdesdk-4.4 @kdeutils-4.4

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "app-text/ghostscript-gpl[cups]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- app-text/ghostscript-gpl-8.70-r1 (Change USE: +cups)
(dependency required by "net-print/cups-1.4.2-r1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "app-misc/hal-cups-utils-0.6.19" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/printer-applet-4.3.98" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@kdeutils-4.4" [argument])

Thanks again.

then you have to put x11-libs/gtk+ -cups to your /etc/portage/package.use file may u should create it when it is your first time. u can delete it from your make.conf dont no if it is -cups or just a minus.

Thank you, thank you, thank you... lol... So that led me in the right direction, I had to do that for gtk+ and for qt-gui (-cups in the package.use directory).

That fixed the issue.

I had the same troubles. Isn't this a bug? Didn't found a bugreport.

If cups is enabled by default I would consider it a bug.

USE=cups is enabled by default in the default profile, and all the others also.

Thanks for the posts. It helped me solve my circular dependencies with KDE 4. I was guessing that I could do -cups and fix my problem. I was getting the syntax wrong, until I saw USE="-cups" emerge -av
