My Mythtv box has just died, and I'd like to migrate the hard drive over to an Opteron 250 machine. The Gentoo install for the Athlon64 was entirely 32bit, as was the kernel. The Cflags etc... were those recommended on the safe cflags wiki e.g.

Code:
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I never went 64 bit with this machine as it only had 2GB of ram. The new machine has 4GB of ram, but being an Opteron that's still only an individual 2GB per CPU right?

Anyway I'm interested to know if this kernel will be bootable directly, or whether I've got some chroot shennanigans ahead of me to get a bootable system.

Thanks
Ferg

In short, it should just work (tm)...

You might have to adjust you kernel to include the (new) controller (most likely AHCI), and to be able to use both cores. (SMP and number of cores)

4GB limit is for the entire system, not just some core/cpu, and therefore you will only be able to access about 3+GB RAM. (depending on the size of the PCI-hole).

At any rate keep a livecd nearby in case anything goes wrong.

cheers
V.

Thanks for that.....! I never thought about the controller. Wish me luck....! Whereas normally I'd quite enjoy reinstalling and configuring this machine, I need the system back and running as it runs the Mythtv AND music system :-)
