Hi all

pretty new on here just so you know, but i've been playing around with the idea of putting Gentoo on my system. I did have it running quite some time ago and was impressed with it, but i've got Ubuntu on at the moment. Problem is, Ubuntu's got a bit boring now and I want something more to do, but @ the same time I get the feeling I might be biting off more than I can chew.

anyone got any words of wisdom to help me decide, i'm pretty new to Linux as well so keep that in mind.

cheers in advance :D

If your bored do a Linux from scratch, then you'll realize just how Gentoo makes compiling from source a breeze B-)

Reading the opening page if I did go this route, i'd probably have a better understanding of Linux then?

Well, you'd have a better understanding of how a system is built and a greater appreciation for the way Portage abstracts the process for users. But, like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it.

Give gentoo a spin... 'A distro a day keeps bill gates away'
The only thing that you can lose are your linux incopetence and ignorance

saying that though, do you not have to compile your own kernel anymore? or have I just skipped something because last time I put Gentoo on that was a part of it?

Yes, you still compile your own kernel, but there is genkernel for those who just want to configure about everything and the kitchen sink into it. I've done LFS a couple of times, once just for the experience, the other when I got disappointed with something I can't even remember in portage. Both times made me realize how challenging it is to keep all the various sources that make up an OS play nice together.

Yes, you do. You'll get there. It is near the end of the install process.

My experience with LFS was okay, but I didn't think that it really helped me understand anything more than I did with Gentoo. It did, however, really make me appreciate Portage even more than I did (although attempting to use other package managers with different distros boosted my appreciation as well).
