Hi,

try the following:

Get rid of the cdrom entry in fstab (put a # in front of the line)
If gnome now automounts the dvd, you should go to
System → Preferences → File Management
Choose the "Media" tab
Select an application for "DVD Video"

If it doesn't work:
Check if your user is in the appropriate groups (cdrom, cdrw)
Check if you can manually mount your drive (might be a hardware issue)
Check if you emerged gnomw-volume-manager with "automount" use flag (it should be OFF, but if it is off and mounting does not work for you then you might try switching it on.)

If you'd search the forum, you'd know gnome-volume-manager is obsolete.

You should not *mount* dvds in order to play them.

Did you not see the post above? gnome-volume-manager is masked and no longer supported.

I'm not exactly sure the story behind this but hal has now been replaced by udev. Unfortunately some of the gentoo documentation has not been updated.

Perhaps this post will help:

Besides, open-source, keep in mind what ppurka said: DVD Video disks mustn't be mounted (like audio CDs), the media-players play directly from the /dev/xyz "file".
