I have a netbook with a 160GB HDD and an SD card slot which I rarely use. Having recently installed laptop-mode-tools (which spins down the HDD based on configured parameters) led me to the idea of offloading commonly-used portions of partitions to a 4GB microSD card that I have, so that perhaps slightly greater performance would be achieved under mains/battery condition (HDD and SDD are accessed simultaneously), and most importantly so that there will be a lower probability of HDD spinup when on battery with common tasks (e.g. Firefox browsing, coding under emacs, reading an ebook).
Any thoughts?
performance (HDD, SSD, respectively):
(note that all partitions on the HDD are encrypted, and the SSD contains a FAT32 fs).
Code: | /dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1158 MB in 2.00 seconds = 579.22 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 176 MB in 3.01 seconds = 58.44 MB/sec
/dev/sdb:
Timing cached reads: 1124 MB in 2.00 seconds = 562.28 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 54 MB in 3.00 seconds = 18.00 MB/sec
