There's this new thing called YouTube HTML5 Viewer. To quote Slashdot, "Instead of spending the next 10 years trying to find a Flash implementation for Linux or OS X that doesn't drain CPU cycles like there's no tomorrow, NeoSmart Technologies has made an HTML5 viewer for YouTube videos. It loads YouTube videos in an HTML5 video container and streams (with skip/skim/pause/resume) against an MP4 resource, and an (optional) userscript file can update YouTube pages with the HTML5 viewer."
Has anyone got this to work with Firefox? The site says it that Firefox requires an MP4 decoder for it to work, but I figure the "VLC Multimedia Plugin" should be taking care of that.
Any ideas? |

Nope, VLC won't help - either the codec needs to be built into firefox itself, or the FF people have to make it capable of using external codecs, which it isn't at the moment.

whit the last firefox ebuild in portage, html5 for youtube doesn't work for me http://omploader.org/vM2JsZA.

Firefox (atm) is not designed to play YouTube HTML5 videos! So no, you cannot change anything at firefox not playing the videos. You could change browsers or complain with YouTube.
YouTube uses the h.264 codec which you need a licence to use when you are a business. Mozilla Foundation does not have a licence and so is not allowed to use the technology. They implemented the OGG/Theora codec, that was once planned to become the standard for HTML5 video tag. But lobbyists made sure that both - OGG/Theora and h.264/AAC - are now optional codecs for HTML5 video streams.
