Hi,
I recently emerged networkmanager and nm-applet. As far as I can tell I followed a bunch of howtos to get it to work. Like this one http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/KNetworkManager. I've added NetworkManager to the default runlevels and dbus starts it so it's working. When I log in there's no nm-applet though, when I try to run it from the terminal I get the following.
Quote: | nm-applet
** (nm-applet:4968): WARNING **: <WARN> request_name(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service.
Error: (9) Connection ":1.31" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file

I've done so googling and found a couple things but I'm not sure how to use them. This person has had the same bug as I do and there's a fix but for version 0.71 I have 0.72.
https://bugs.gentoo.org/282612
There's an ebuild but I don't know how to use it or even if I could. A little help would be wicked.
PROBLEM 2 :: Another thing I noticed, when I start nm-applet as root I can't open any other programs in my X. Pretty much the same thing as this guy here. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-799291-highlight-nmapplet.html
I've switched back to net.eth0 and removed networkmanager from the runlevels. I really would like to get this to work because of the easy vpnc connection control (need it to connect to my uni).

Update: By following what this guy did in comment 2 on https://bugs.gentoo.org/282612 I can no log in and nm-applet starts.
nm-applet starts when I log in, unfortunately problem 2 hasn't gone away. As soon as nm-applet is running I can no longer open any programs on my X. I can keep using the ones I have open but can't open any others. |

Knetworkmanager is deprecated (kde3)
i would suggest to use wicd. perviously i used networkmanager and xfce4-applet but now i use wicd. it is more configurable than nm.
have a look at http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Speed_Up_Boot_With_Wicd for install_instructions
and don't forget to remove nm from runlevel before removing the package... (not nesseserry but usefull in case of unlikelyhood fetch all packages for wicd first Code: | emerge -vDf net-misc/wicd | )
hope this helps _________________ Always look on the bright side of live. badu badubadubado |

Well the only reason why I want to use networkmanager is because of the vpnc plugin which wicd doesn't have. |
