I have been trying to update a rather old Gentoo install. I have accidentally managed to kill gcc and severly cripple the system in other ways (ie man does not work). I suspect that I may still have the compiled binaries, but I do not know how to massage portage to re-install gcc.

Any help would be appreciated.

IRQsRFun,

Start with
Code:
gcc-config
installing a gcc does not automatically select it.
If you have a gcc installed that will find it.

If gcc is missing, fetch the binary you need for your arch from tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org and untar the binary to your / (root)
Ignore the warninga bout extra garbage at end of file ignored. You will still need to select gcc with gcc-config

I have downloaded http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/default-linux/x86/sys-devel/gcc-4.3.4.tbz2 to / and ran tar -xvf gcc-4.3.4.tbz2 from root.

I am running emerge gcc to install over over the tinderbox version
then I plan to run gcc-config again.

Thank You

IRQsRFun,

Thats the right thing to do. You probably noticed that these is lots more things in the tinderbox.
You may yest need them to be able to update your system
