PostPosted: Fri Jan 01, 2010 8:22 pm    Post subject: nvidia fails after emerging Reply with quote

Hi
i just built a new kernel (2.6.31-r6)
and emerged nvidia-drivers, following the steps
detailed in the gentoo nvidia guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml)
The settings in xorg.conf are the same as before, when everything worked (2.6.30-r6).

But when i boot the computer, instead of showing the nvidia logo and then starting gnome,
the screen stays black with intermittent flickers of white pixels.

Then i went back to the previously working configuration, and reemerged
nvidia (with the correct linux-link), and now i have the same problem (black screen)

Could it be that my graphics card doesn't work with the new driver?

If yes, how can i get back my old driver (i don't remember the version;
i last emerged it aroundmiddle of october)?

Thank You
Jody

you might want to check if your card is supported here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html find the appropriate driver and see if your card is supported.
If your card isn't supported by the current driver then simply mask anything above the driver version you need. Say if your card is supported by the 96.43.xx drivers then add anything above it to your package.mask

Zeerak - thank you for your reply.
I checked the page you mentioned, but my Graphics Card is
a GeForce 7000M which is not listed there.

To give more information:
the "bad" version is nvidia-drivers-185.18.36,
the version i had used previously is 180.60
(apparently there is no version available between the two)

I have managed to find and emerge the 180.60 version,
but i ran into problems when doing modprobe:
Code:
# modprobe nvidia
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.24-gentoo-r5/modules.dep: No such file or directory

But forcing the directory didn't work either:
Code:
# modprobe -C lib/modules/2.6.31-gentoo-r6
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.31-gentoo-r6/video/nvidia.ko line 1: ignoring bad line starting with 'ELF'

Apart from the lines about"ACPI: failed to connect to the ACPI event daemon" everything looks ok,
and my old nvidia driver evoked this message, too.

If required, i can also send the .config from my kernel build, but i don't know if it's
possible to send attachments in this forum.

Any help would be very much appreciated,

Thank You,
Jody

Your card should work fine on Gentoo with +/- nvidia-drivers-185.18.36

Please post your emerge --info and the xorg-server version.

And the output of this
Code:
egrep '^[^#].*(AGP|DRM|NVIDIA|FB|MTRR|SYSVIPC)' /usr/src/linux/.config

Does this tell you anything?

By the way: after unmerging nvidia, rebuilding the kernel and 'emerge "<nvidia-drivers-185.18.36"' i was able to get
a working environment with the old nvidia driver 180-60.

Thank you for your efforts
Jody

Nice that you got that working. :)

What all that output told me is that your make.conf settings are fine (with the possible exception CFLAGS).
I would set it at CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe" or even better CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe"
You can see what -march=native will set like this
Code:
gcc -### -march=native -E /usr/include/stdlib.h 2>&1 | grep "/usr/libexec/gcc/.*cc1"

Also it tells me that your kernel is in fact correctly configured for nVidia.

It is often necessary to downgrade and mask nvidia-drivers. It all depends on the kernel/nvidia-drivers combination.

Thanks for your explanations!

So i guess i'll stay with my "old" nvidia driver for a while... :)

Cheers
