I did a search of the boards and internet but coundt find anything that could help me out with this error. Any ideas?
I try entering the root password and Control-D like it says but nothing happens.

try to boot with the gentoo live cd
and try to diagnose from within that environment
you could then
- run a e2fsck on /dev/sda1
- chroot into your gentoo installation, and set the root password to something keyboard-independent
- ...

I should add that i'm running this headless and that i'm connecting to the box using hyperterminal until i can ssh into the box itself. (i'm not sure if that matters in my current problem or not, i suspect not)
What do you mean "set the root password to something keyboard-independent"? Forgive me, for all intensive purposes consider me a linux noob. I'm learning as i go!
Thanks for your reply,

that looks to me as if you entered the root password, but it failed
could it be that it failed because you have a non-us keyboard? _________________ Unanswered Post Initiative | Search | FAQ

It is a US keyboard but like i said, i'm connecting via hyperterminal in windows with a null modem cable. This method worked to setup the entire system so i'm assuming it'll work not using the live cd. Maybe i can dig up a USB -5 keyboard to try it.
Also i ran the e2fsck on /dev/sda1 and it looked ok to me (after it ran)
When i boot up with the liveCD, mount everything and chroot into the box, poke around and check things out to make sure they are ok (to the best of my limited ability) i then try to umount everything but the /mnt/gentoo will not unmount. It always says the device is busy.
I've tried lsof(which isnt installed) fuser -ki (which doesnt help) and i finally use umount -l (L) to get it unmounted, but then it isnt a clean unmount. Is the clean unmount causing the module errors? |
