|
|
I'm long time Gentoo user 7-8 years. I've done at least a dozen installs without any major problems. But now in my latest I've come across a problem that I just can't figure out.
This is a new install and I'm attempting to boot the install for the first time and the boot freezes and this is the last message:
Code: |
usb-stor-scan used greatest stack depth: 6116 bytes left
|
I unplugged all my usb devices except the keyboard and mouse and it still freezes but the last message is slightly different:
Code: |
khelper used greatest stack depth: [0-9]* bytes left
|
(I didn't write the exact number of bytes on this one but I don't think it is pertinent)
This is the gentoo-sources kernel. And I've done very little changes to the configuration so it is mostly the "factor default" configuration and it is very long so I'm reluctant to post it (is there an easier way beside cut & paste?).
Here are some basic system info:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8200 @ 2.66GHz
4GB RAM
Has anyone else ever had this problem? Any ideas on how to fix?
Thanks,
Mike |

boot cd, mount partitions, enter chroot
Code: | emerge wgetpaste
wgetpaste -s ca /usr/src/linux/.config |
should return a url at which will be your config, post the url
also post results of:
Code: | lspci -n
lspci -k
cat /etc/fstab
fdisk -l
cat /proc/cpuinfo |
the entire content of the screen (except line numbers) at the time of the freeze is of great interest. |

Not sure how to do this. I do have Ubuntu running on the same machine (in fact I'm installing Gentoo from Ubuntu) if that helps. But when I boot into Gentoo this is early in the boot up and there isn't even a log created in /var/log.
Thanks for the help.

Yup. I thought of the camera just after I posted the previous response.
Here's a pic http://imagebin.ca/view/3vYZUPZ.html of the boot messages. It isn't all the messages because others fly by before it stops. If you need more I can try to get a picture as they scroll by. |

I'm wondering if CONFIG_USB=m might not be a problem.
Perhaps CONFIG_USB=y might be a better choice. |

http://pastebin.ca/1724286 contains a replacement config file.
Based on http://62.3.120.141/~pappy/ and https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4570091.html#4570091 .
Some of your customization may be lost.
boot cd, mount partitions, enter chroot,
Code: | mv /usr/src/linux/.config /boot/myoldconfig
cd /usr/src/linux
make clean
make mrproper
wget -O config http://pastebin.ca/raw/1724286
mv config .config
make menuconfig
make && make modules_install |
copy the new kernel to /boot
exit chroot and reboot
If this gets you up you can compare your new kernel to your old to see what I left out. Suggest "Meld".

That is how it was set initially. I believe my previous installs and other Gentoo systems are CONFIG_USB=m but I don't have access to another right now to confirm.
Anyhow, I set it to compile in kernel and still the same problem. I've made other changes to my kernel config so I posted a new .config here:

Thanks,

I think CONFIG_DM_MIRROR=y is required for LVM |

Thanks Mike and Donahue for your help and time.
I found the problem and whew boy is this embarassing
This is a dual boot system that originally had 32-bit Gentoo installed. After getting an additional hard drive to handle the large number of photos (hey, I'm a parent), I had plenty of space to try other distributions. Since I still use Gentoo at work I knew there were a bunch of updates in the queue (mostly kde4) and decided to start using Gentoo at home again in hopes that upgrades at work would go smoothly. But, I wanted to switch to 64-bit, I went through the install and when it came time to install grub I just modified the existing grub.conf (since it was still used for booting to Ubuntu).
The kernel upgraded since I last used Gentoo from 2.6.29 to 2.6.31. I went through grub.conf and changed all instances of 2.6.29 to 2.6.31 except...you guessed it...the boot configuration I was actually using . So I was trying to boot a 32-bit kernel with my shiny new 64-bit install @#$%^.
tldr on to the next steps in the install.
Thanks again,
Mike |
