I agree. Perhaps an Admin can move this into a new sticky Gnome-2.26 thread? _________________ 0mFg, G3nt00 r0X0r$ T3h B1g!1111

I guess I need to enable the GNOME overlay to have gnome-power-manager 2.26 and fast-user-switch-applet 2.26. Some C++ bindings, instead, seems to be missing (i.e. plotmm). _________________ Byez, Axel. |

Maybe. I saw on the Gnome website that the source for 2.26.2 is out. So maybe it'll turn up in portage sooner or later. I just tried to digest a renamed ebuild in my local overlay, but it croaked on the first patch download, sadly. So it's not that easy... _________________ 0mFg, G3nt00 r0X0r$ T3h B1g!1111

I guess so... however the gnome-power-manager is available at gentoo overlay. _________________ Byez, Axel. |

Hello folks.
I have been wondering when does the 2.26 gnome go stable. I know the answer too... 'It's ready when it is ready'. Ehh.
To track down the situation of gnome packages for Gentoo I have been watching the gentoo-portage as well as some of the developers web pages. The dev's have lists of packages with their versions and stability status. All nice information. However why not have the lists in some logical location? Dev's probably point out that they use the pages for tracking their own progress, but that's not to say they wouldn't be useful for the casual users too. Problem is that there may be information available but it must be searched from blog posts, forum posts, package lists, bugzilla etc.
The gnome setup guide is old. I did not check KDE or xfce guides but such things should be updated at least annually. But preferably for each new version for each DE. So I was wondering if there are any updates coming for the doc's?
Also should there be a list of default gnome programs and use flags somewhere too? Which use flag enables or disables what? _________________ Everything can be done. There's just a longer delivery time for impossible projects. |

You could always check the gnome 2.26 gnome stabilization tracker bug on gentoo's bugzilla install. It's been mostly silent as of late and most of the bug bugs have been fixed. I don't think it can be too incredibly much longer. NOTE: If you look at it, asking how much longer it will take on bugzilla is generally bad etiquette. |

Updated to Gnome 2.26.3. Strangely enough, any application from gnome-media-2.26.0 package refuses to load. Tracing a bit I got lost on gstelement.c from GStreamer. Anyway, this is the error message I've got from gstreamer-properties.

Any clues?
EDIT: Ok, nevermind, I needed to update all gst-plugins-* to 0.23.11 |

Yes it is I am waiting for it to settle down in the gnome overlay.
I think 2.24 is still considered gentoo "stable" so this is still a sticky.. _________________ John

How do I emerge GNOME 2.28? When ever the Gentoo developers deem it stable enough? _________________ Gigabyte GA-P45T-ES3G LGA 775 Intel P45

It's not in portage. Parts of it are in the gnome-overlay but I am not sure that is ready yet. _________________ John

| I've read in the news that GNOME-2.26 is stable now. It seems to be the case on amd64, but not on x86. Am I doing something wrong or is 2.26 not that stable yet? I get actual updates for other packages, so I assume that my synching is ok. |

I do not recall having a single problem with 2.26 in the last 6 months or so of every day use. I am going to upgrade to 2.28 soon however. _________________ John

Thanks timebandit. Things were starting to get a bit creapy with how that 2.24 thread wouldn't die. Was actually starting to wonder if no Gentoo moderators were watching the forums. The reply count is also less insane now. |

I can understand KDE-using mods overlooking it, but I've used GNOME since 2.4 or thereabouts, so I have no excuse.
Someone let me know when 2.30 (or 3?) comes out, so I can split this thread for 2.28 and remain a respectful distance behind. _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.

After updating to gnome 2.26 I had various issues with the sounds. I have switched to pulseaudio because I guess that is what the gnome dev's are wishing we should use.
So today I got finally the audio working at gnome again. I had disabled the gconf module loading in /etc/pulse/default.pa. I enabled the module again and there is sound again.
Other thing that was causing issues was the system sound theme. If I was using some audio application and there was some sound output from the sound theme then the application sound went kind of disabled and there was noise and cracking sounds. Thus I went to System -> Preferences -> Sound -> and on the Sound Effects tab I disabled the sound theme. This helped with the applications sound.
Also I had to fight with Amarok too to get any sound of it. Ehh...
This pulseaudio thing has been IMO a big mess and there has been no clear update path provided for gentoo users. There are conflicting howto's and pulse audio wikis and some tell use the pulseaudio server and others say do not use it. All this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Anyway now things seem to work again. Although ever since I started to use the pulseaudio the system has felt less responsive and I don't like that one bit. Maybe I could try get rid of the pulseaudio altogether provided that there are a good instructions for that somewhere. _________________ Everything can be done. Last summer when I switched to 2.26 I did not have pulseaudio and I also did not have a single sound related problem with gnome. I have since switched to gnome 2.28 and then more recently back to kde-4.3 so I do not use gnome as often. _________________ John
