Hmm the issues seem to continue still. If the crackling and noise appear I can get the sound working again if I adjust the sound of the used application in the volume control application. This adjusts the master volume at the same time.

Weird. 8O

why does stabilization of gnome so slowly?
in my view, versions of KDE, 4.3.0, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.3, 4.3.4, 4.4.0beta,rc... 4.4.0
are similar to versions of GNOME, 2.28.0, 2.28.1, 2.28.2, 2.28.3, 2.28.4, 2.29.x.... 2.30.0

KDE 4.3(.3) had been stable for a long time, but why that GNOME 2.28(including 2.28.0, ..., 2.28.x) won't be stable until 2.30.0 is released?

is there anything that stoping gnome from being stable? wish I can help.

I just can't stand that hearing news about new features of the desktop but waiting for half a year to catch up with it.
distributions like ubuntu 9.10 and fedora 12 release months ago have already been using a new version of GNOME for a long time.

why gentoo's KDE-team works so perfect even I clearly remember that lots of people took a try of gentoo because of KDE 4 was added into portage just as it released.

I feel sorry to complain above with my poor english, ignore them plz.

One thing gnome-2.28 is not fully in the tree. Parts of it still are in the gnome overlay. Well this was the case last week...

Install the "unstable" version and test it. If you find bugs report them.

I should have added before you report a bug, make sure it is not already reported.

I have added gnome overlay, but neither gnome-base/gnome or gnome-base/gnome-light to be used for autounmask there.
and tried to find meta package list for package.keywords but nothing found.

however, I am apologizing for not reporting a request bug[bug 299580] for this.

The highest gnome-base/gnome is

gnome-base/gnome-2.26.3

from the gnome overaly.

That still brings in a lot of gnome-2.28 stuff

Here is what I have installed (some may be old I have not updated in a while):

Code:
jmd0 ~ # qlist -Iv gnome
app-text/gnome-doc-utils-0.18.1

The other thing is (I may be wrong), the first release tends to be a bit of beta like quality. Distributors submit patches to upstream, and that is partially how it becomes stable. The gnome guys plan on a few 2.28.x...2.30.x...etc.

I'm trying to emerge gnome, but it keeps throwing new useflags I have to set at me:

Code:
emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=sys-auth/pambase-20090430[consolekit,-gnome-keyring]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-auth/pambase-20100310 (Change USE: +consolekit)
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gdm-2.20.10-r3" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-2.28.2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome" [argument])

and the likes. I remember something similar from a year ago when I emerged KDE and it turned out to be a couple hundred.

How should I go about not having to do this by hand?

Edit: Nevermind, I couldn't help trying to just enable a few more to see if they were the last, and it worked. Sorry

autounmask seems to automatically add USE flags as well as keywords now. I noticed it edits to my package.use file from when I unmaked Gnome 2.28.
