general description says:
- smp optimized

mozilla devs say:
- less memory fragmentation

I know mozilla and gnash that use jemalloc, though, there are other apps, too.
Still linking jemalloc statically. I wonder if they are not better off with a dynamic library.

So, I'm trying to build your latest on AMD64 but the build gets stuck here:
Code:

There's no message, no CPU use, no nothing, it just sits there doing nothing until I abort the build. Suggestions?

yes, it is a pity that sandbox links to system allocator which bites jemalloc allocator. :)

I've builded a graphite+jemalloc version yesterday with success. It seems to be working fine and it's definitly a way faster to load and to use
The gentoo main tree version is out, but without the optimisation flags of the geki.
Thank you Geki for your stuff

newer jemalloc versions fail because of this ...
http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/d6bbea319540

edit #1
bumped jemalloc to latest working version.

edit #2
okay, after some struggling I found the cause.

this looks suspicious. C and dynamic array?! that way? anyone enlighten me, please.
just because gdb does not show it being extended, although there are more than 1 elements.
http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/e2b143e9609f/memory/jemalloc/jemalloc.c#l750

fails at
http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/e2b143e9609f/memory/jemalloc/jemalloc.c#l2345

anyway this is in, now.
Quote:
ana ~ # emerge -qpv dev-libs/jemalloc
[ebuild R ] dev-libs/jemalloc-0_p20091110 USE="-debug -statistics -validate"
if you enable useflag [validate] the build tools segfault. :o

if you do not build, i.e. 'emerge <whatever>', you can safely enable the useflag [validate].
at runtime, using openoffice for example, jemalloc works fine for the short startup test I did. fun ...

edit #3
updated 'known issues' section and openoffice build-depend for above-mentioned failure.

woa, solved two annoying issues this weekend.
not its bugs but worked around, which is as good as bugfixing for me.
well, at least when they are not my personal projects.

this seems to correlate with what I experienced so far:

the newer libjemalloc builds segfault and/or cause problems during build of openoffice - so I had to copy over the old ones before building openoffice

after the compilation (emerge openoffice) has finished the new libjemalloc just seems to work fine :o

emerged jemalloc and it works ZOMG AWESOME 8O

openoffice is faster than never before:

I've opened several ppt files from university and they NEVER OPENED FASTER 8O

they are now almost instantly opening

HAIL TO THE MSOFFICE-ALTERNATIVE 8)

(disclaimer: in the meantime I also tweaked my kernel-flags and my system so it also might be those ;) )

amazing work geki ! (and of course: thanks a lot to Jason Evans )

what do you mean by testing the build-tools ? ooo-build ?

edit:

ok, it really depends on the ppt file - but it's still magnitudes faster than before

edit2:

now would be a good point in time to add multicore-support to openoffice: it just utilizes one core to the max and the other one sits there and waits

this would speed up converting of large office-files tremendously  :!:

I mean the segfaulting build-tools during emerge of openoffice.
although, I bet it works as long as you have dev-libs/jemalloc[!debug] since the code they were failing on was the validation code of jemalloc which went into its debug setup. ( does that sentence make any sense?  )

hmm, wrt to the multi-core support, OOo is multi-threaded to some degree, but I guess the processing methods are not. :o

Ussing the jemalloc-9999999, now openoffice builds fine without the FEATURES tricks :)

that works?! how does it manage two 'malloc' functions? okay ... I will see for myself next time. 8O

edit #1
incredible, indeed! :o

bumped for ooo-build-3.2.0.7 release.

edit #2
system-redland will be possible again, somewhen.
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=108911

edit #3
app-office/openoffice-3.2.1.12.20100227 released
- ooo-build master snapshot
- system-redland patch included
- much like 3.2.0 still

I am in the process of bumping openoffice snapshot, though, the native mysql driver patch needs defuzz'ing.
so, the update you will see is broken!
either one fixes that or wait for my release post.
I hope the maintainer of the patch will defuzz it somewhen.

why I post this?
there are important fixes to packages in my overlay.

I am adding net-p2p/lince-1.2 since it is unmaintained in gentoo repo.
it is a nice alternative to vuze/java. :o

a little bit of ranting:
I opened vuze and the funky donations window showed up. then, it is time to look for an alternative. ;)

edit #1
I am building a snapshot now.

yay, app-office/openoffice-3.2.1.12.20100309 has been released.

edit #1
I have created a saxon-9.2 ebuild.
if it works with openoffice you will see it in java-overlay, too.
meh, double the maintenance. :o

mysql_driver.h is located at /usr/include

config.log
http://pastebin.com/GjKHC5dp

without mysql it fails at
Code:
checking which boost to use... external
checking boost/shared_ptr.hpp usability... no
checking boost/shared_ptr.hpp presence... no
checking for boost/shared_ptr.hpp... no
configure: error: boost/shared_ptr.hpp not found. install boost
make: *** [stamp/build] Error 1

wonder if the openoffice ebuild is supposed to work with your splitted boost ebuilds?
