With a multi-core machine, I keep seeing "Bus Error" on various builds. Normally this would make me worry about my hardware, but it's consistent (only certain packages) and always fixable by using "-j1" on the build, and there are no problems with anything else. All this makes me think it's some issue like a file not being complete when read by another thread or something.

But it's still been nagging at my mind, so I'm wondering if anyone else encounters this? Or even better if someone has a precise explanation of why it's throwing a bus error rather than anything else.

Which packages in particular?
Code:
emerge --info

will answer questions about 32/64 bit, architecture etc.

This is a bit of a wild guess here, but it might be a marginal power supply or components that have degraded over time (especially the capacitors in the Vcore regulator), or maybe just a loose connector or ram that needs re-seating. Compiling certain packages stresses the hardware more than others, and if voltages aren't to spec it may cause errors. Running -j1 uses only one core which limits the maximum load that's placed on the components.

Does it happen always at the exact same point while compiling those packages? Consistency will tend to rule out hardware issues.

So it seems it is just me. Hmm.

That's worth a shot, thanks.

It's not consistent within a build, but then concurrency issues would produce that too and I don't get the impression that it's limited to stressful packages.

Parts of kde are favourite, but embarrassingly I can't think of one at the moment. Older versions of kdelibs used to trigger it but that seems to have been fixed.

I'd be surprised if there is a global solution beyond not using high -j, but "emerge --info" gives
Code:
