Media Server?

Howdy!

Is there any sort of media server software that I can put onto a small computer attached to a stereo to make a remotely accessible (or perhaps from a console also) music player? I know that MythTV should be able to do something like this, but I THINK I want something that's just lightweight and simple.

Doesn't mpd stream music to the client machine rather than play it on the server (which will be attached to the stereo in this case)?

No, it does not stream, it is a music player which can be controlled by various user interfaces over the net.
