I have installed Funtoo on a HD, the system boots fine, I see the command prompt, I' m able to do "emerge --sync", I have installed xorg and Gnome, but when I typed "startx", I received this disappointing message:

(ΕΕ) Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error:
no screens found.

How can I correct it and have my Funtoo Gnome working?

emerge --info please.... (there is most likely an config error in your make.conf) or as a quick 'n' dirty solution - install those missing drivers (xf86-video-ati, xf86-video-fbdev, xf86-vesa) cheers V.

Strange thing! There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf but /etc/X11/xorg.conf.example !!!

those drivers are not listed in your VIDEO_CARDS= in make.conf so they have not been built.

Add them to your VIDEO_CARDS= and do

Yes!!! All went fine! @ d2_racing I followed your instructions, I rebooted the box, and I saw the "Out of Range" screen message. I changed screen, and then I saw the login window of Funtoo, waiting for me!!! Thank you very much! But, I would like to use my LCD screen, how can I solve this problem? My screen is LG-Flatron L1750SQ.

There is no xorg.conf, only xorg.conf.example! Strange. I posted it, earlier, you can see it.

OK, i did it! The xorg.conf file is up! Another strange thing: I wanted to change the place o f a boot option (genkernel is the 3rd choise in boot screen) and i typed nano /boot/grub/menu.lst I saw an empty file!!! I looked by the graphical way, and the file "boot" is completely empty! Is it possible that it cannot see the /boot partition? Where are the boot files?

In gentoo, /boot is not mounted at boot time. You have to mount it manually when you want to install a kernel.
Look in /etc/fstab against the line for /boot, it probably has the noauto option set.

Run the command

whenever you want to work on your boot, or remove the noauto option from /etc/fstab

Thank you, guys for your precious informations. As an Ubuntu Ultimate user for about 4 years, I need to learn enough about my beloved Gentoo!

These are the results of the two commands:

As it seems, it doesn't see the /boot partition.
But it boots very fast and nice.

@ d2_racing: The creation of the xorg.conf file was not a very good idea, after all! When I rebooted, I saw the "No screens found" message. I removed the file and it returned to normal boot. :wink:
