One thing I realised the other day is that there seems to be no such thing as a /etc/gentoo-version file in gentoo. Maybe I'm just blind, but most other distros I've used have had some file in /etc containing the version number of the distro. Sometimes that file is actually a useful thing. How about adding such a file to gentoo?
Of course I see problems, like what defines the version. I installed from an 1.1a cd but did emerge rsync and emerge -u system a few hours ago. Am I running 1.1a, 1.2 or 1.3a? When should the number inside this file be bumped up one notch? How should it work? Should it be in the baselayout package or somewhere in the /usr/portage tree?
Suggestions, anyone? Am I making sense? |

That doesn't make much sense. It's especially one of gentoos benefits, NOT having "versions". there is no need to update to a new version like with suseredhatmandrakewhatsoever. I've my gentoo here running since march, so what gentoo do I have? it was based on 1.0_rcsomething, but I don't even remember, because there's no need to - what I'm very glad about
