I have a mandrake partition on /dev/hda1 and swap is /dev/hda5. I installed Gentoo on my system using /dev/hda3 as /boot and /dev/hda4 as /.

How do I make lilo boot gentoo? I want to use lilo to boot as I already have it running.

The problem is that mandrake can't see the gentoo partitions so when I change lilo.conf and run lilo, it fails because it looks for my kernel. Even if I mounted the gentoo partitions, they still wouldn't be mounted as they are on gentoo so I don't know how to fix this.

help...

Simple solution (though not the best ;) ):
since you seem to be using different kernels copy the kernels to the /boot of mandrake (if you use this one as primary system - something you will have to explain here, why!) and just add a lilo.conf entry with the gentoo-kernel and the gentoo root partition.

Need a quick "fix" ? Then ignore below.

The forums are full of confused linuxers that had to switch from a somewhat understood lilo, into the world of - grub !.! I was kinda unhappy also.
For your use - Either loader will work, grub maybe easier to setup, the syntax is less.
Once used to the idea it ignores other than hard drives, & counts from zero.
Recommend ? Make backup copies & play around How do you boot now ?
- study the man pages, examine menu.lst & lilo.conf examples.
Local LUG group here is mostly "Drakers" They stress ease of "Win-Gui Wizards"
Result -very very many are lost at command line. My two cents ??
Put floppy into drive, don't mount, " cd" to /usr/src/linux, "su" to root & type "make bzdisk" Far easier than building lilo or grub enabled boot floppy.
Later, learn about using " dd " See also "append" "alternate kernels" "LBA"
The boot loader does not have to reside in master boot record sector,
For grubby details RTM-GRUB
Always - back-up first, tweak later.
At install, any changes - make boot-floppies. Eliminate lock-outs
Second rule - make copies of current partition tables,
Corrupted tables - no problem.
Two or more O/systems, or versions of same type. How better to learn, compare.
