Try `gcc-config -l` rather than eselect.

hedmo,

You had several versions of gcc installed but did not have the latest one selected. When --depclean ran it removed your selected gcc and lest the newer (unselected) gcc.

Run
Code:
gcc-config
and choose the remaining gcc.
Follow the gcc upgrade guide too or you may discover that other things are broken

those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
