Japanese input in gnome-terminal

I was having some trouble getting Japanese input working in gnome-terminal. When I switch to Japanese input, the Japanese will appear correctly in gnome-terminal and when I push spacebar, the selection menu comes up to choose the kanji/kana however once I make my selection the word will turn into question marks. I am using uim and anthy. The menu selection works perfectly in Firefox (haven't tried it in any other programs) just gnome-terminal cannot complete properly. Has anyone else experienced this?
