audio plugdev video cdrom etc when using NIS

I am on NIS and I cannot get sound, or direct rendering, or access my cdrom, all because NIS is in control of my user account group membership on the local machine. NIS does not have such groups as audio, plugdev, video, cdrom, floppy, etc. This is a large heterogeneous network and I cannot ask for those groups to be in NIS.

After a bit of searching, I found udev rules that list the GROUPS for the various devices (cdrom, video card, etc), but those rules are very complex, and it is no obvious to me what to do there. Esp. on upgrades when those rules will be erased!

I can't believe I'm the only person with this problem. Help!
