KDE Very Slow

  • Quote

Post by mornindew » Wed Nov 04, 2009 5:12 am

Hi all,
I just installed KDE for the first time and it is painfully slow. I am brand new to Gentoo (and KDE) so I don't even know how to begin diagnosing the issue. Here are the symptoms that I am seeing.

1. Once I login it takes about 1-2 minutes to login
2. There seems to be about a 5 second delay on the clicks

It might have been a mistake but since it was my first time installing kde I decided to "emerge kde-meta". I have 3GB of Ram on the box, my swap space is 1024 MB, my Boot space is 512MB and my Root is 300GB. I would appreciate any help in guiding me towards diagnosing why it is so slow. Thank you very much

is your /etc/hosts file correctly configured ?

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1 mybox.at.myplace mybox localhost
Are /tmp and /var/tmp chmod 1777 ?

Code: Select all

 drwxrwxrwt 12 root root 4096 Nov 3 19:40 tmp
Is consolekit started ?

Code: Select all

# eselect rc show
Status of init scripts in runlevel "default"
  consolekit [started]

and next time start with the juicy bits. Xorg.0.log, dmesg, xorg.conf, kdm.log.

does "eselect opengl set xorg-x11" then restarting xdm help? Just sounds like my machine after i upgraded to xorg 1.7.1.
please post the following:

xorg.conf
rc-status
emerge -pv xorg-server xorg-drivers
emerge --info
Ps = (1.5 x 6 x .75) / {(4/3) (pi) [(31.039 x 10^15) (46.5 x 10^9)]^3}
Seems like a waste..

thank you all for the reply. Here is the outputs that you were asking for.

Just as an FYI running the command "eselect opengl set xorg-x11" seemed to help but I wouldn't call it fast yet.

xorg.conf (I am using HAL)

still missing the most important things:
Xorg.0.log, kdm.log, nvidia drivers version, glxinfo output.

That looks almost exactly like my laptop (Dell D620) except I have Intel wireless...

I had same problem with xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r + gentoo-sources-2.6.30 + both nvidia-drivers-190 and latest 180. driver... etc. KDE decided to turn off eye candy after some time. Using older kernel until they fix issues with nvidia drivers that while worked fast(er) made the whole thing do crazy stuff, like scrollbars working OK when you pull them with mouse - but not going all the way to each end if you do it with pg up/dn or arrow keys ...

So right now I have:
xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r
2.6.29-gentoo-r5 kernel
nvidia-drivers-180.60 and it's working OK with eye-candy (cube and all)
