Gnome 2.2
Bluecurve and one of those fashionably large icon trash cans
Downloading a few new icon sets after having a look through here, some people have verrrry nice desktops indeed. Puts mine to shame :)

I spent a lot of time trying to make everything look as consistent as possible. I don't care too much about eye-candy and I do not reboot my computer that often, but when I do I like it to be somewhat of an experience. Hence I tried to find artwork that fitted nicely together using warm and consistent colours and then changed as much a possible from bootsplash to the OpenOffice icons. Vanity is my favorite sin, and I dare say I feel rather proud about myself with the result.

Ok. Here is my screenshot.

It's 6nome chrome mixed with Kleanux frames. You can see BreakMyGentoo Gnome 2.4.0_p1, the Gimp version 1.3, gnome-terminal with transparency and im-ja japanese input applet (available in emerge)

Sure, why not?

http://paperwings.tamu.edu/~jack/sept_03.jpg

fluxbox 0.9.6pre8
SECOND theme
gkrellm
idesk
some dockapps

And my favorite underated terminal,
Multi-Gnome-Terminal
It's just to bad the tab area is so large. Wish I could shrink it without turning it off entirely.

Oh yeah, I drew the wallpaper myself (well and added the words and brown area in Gimp).

Here's a thought: Maybe the reason the current desktop environments are the way they are and why the Windows desktop has not change much in basic format since Windows 95 is that Microsoft actually did some UI research that shows what the majority of people naturally can work with.quote]

It is funny that you should say that, because I am currently taking a bachelor on GUI and interface design, and most people think that "Windows 95 just looks ugly" and that there was no thought behind it. That is very wrong, but the reason that the Windows desktop haven't changed much, is becuase it is harder for users to navigate when the interface suddenly changes. So the leap to the candy-look of WindowsXP was subject to much debate before it was decided to go ahed.

But since Microsoft are afraid to scare people away with different interfaces, GNOME and other free DM's win because they can change; and much research have been done on GUI's since Windows 95.

I'm in a hurry so sorry if it don't make sense. ;)

This fear of new UIs is one of the reasons I'm having trouble rolling out OS X. Even had a former boss (he left) get pissed off at me when I upgraded the sales manager's machine; the sales manager was thrilled! Ah, well.

ok...I just recently switched to kahakai and it's eye candy city (ok...so I like transparency). Got the background off of deviantart..what you will see is xchat, gkrellm, xmms (bottom corner), an Eterm, and the shaded buddylist of mine from gaim. (oh yeah...and a web-browser at forums.gentoo.org...can't forget that ;) )

http://www.thecodemonks.com/linux/scrennie.png
*Note: the file is a freaking 1mb in size...if there is demand, I'll trim it down a bit. I just took the screenshot straight from scrot and posted it.

enjoy!

Aquativo GTK theme (with modefied Nautilus buttons)
MetaTivo MetaCity theme
SmoothStripesGloss XMMS skin
Nuvola icon theme
Some Gdesklets to spice up the desktop
Wallpaper unknown (think I got it from deviantart)

Now, most people will probably think this is lame compared to theirs, but I like functionality and consistency (along with having something easy on the eyes) much more than eyecandy. Plus, I get enough of the real Aqua look-and-feel at work. :)

[img:c5219b3766]http://linuxdrivel.netfirms.com/small-20030920.jpg[/img:c5219b3766]

And before you say it looks kinda like GNOME 8O I'll point out that that panel-at-top-windowlist-at-bottom was a KDE idea first--before KDE was even 1.0 in fact. :D The icons are shamelessly stolen from GNOME, so I've been told.

The windowmanager style is KDE's built-in Web style, and the widget style for KDE and GTK+/GTK+2 is QtCurve, a *Curve variant that's KDE colorscheme-aware. The icon set is Gorilla. Both QtCurve and Gorilla can be found at KDE-Look.org.
