Why on earth did someone set the arts USE flag for app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-qtlibs-20091004_rc1 and app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs-20091004_rc1? You're kidding, right? Please tell me you're kidding. arts has been dead for years. Who breathed life back into this turkey, and can we un-breathe that life?

Thanks.

Blessed be!
Pappy

I agree, that arts is pretty dead, but as long as kde3 is in portage (read, kde4 is not stable), I guess I has some right to exist.
OTHT (I cannot check now), do the default profiles (or at least desktop) set arts by default?

just my .02$

More information. It seems app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-qtlibs-20091004_rc1 requires app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs-20091004_rc1 to have the arts USE flag enabled. Apparently, this is for qt4 support. I've shut that down. So, the question remains, is arts making a comeback? If so, eww. If not, why enable the flag?

Perhaps a bug report might be a better arena if I don't get a good enough answer.

Blessed be!

No, arts is definitely going away. And remember that the 32-bit libs packages are built by the amd64 team, not the multimedia one.

This was always the case that emul-qtlibs required emul-soundlibs with arts enabled. I even have

Code:

 app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs arts

in package.use because of that for a long time. So it is not a comeback, rather nobody yet cleaned this up in emul libraries.

I don't know why, after not needing it, all of a sudden, now I need this library. Considering the only package I have that needs qt4 is qjackctl, I'm starting to wonder if there's a better option out there that won't force my computer to install unneeded libraries.

Stiil, arts? I thought I was dealing with the most up-to-date distro there was. arts is so three years ago. Oh well, I forced that option off by customizing an ebuild. Perhaps it's time that Gentoo as a whole took the same approach.

arts...really?

Blessed be!

Oh wow, that's a serious oversight. You should file a bug about that. Arts has been deprecated for a while.

Actually, anybody enabling arts should be shot on sight.

I was hoping for that reply! Thanks.

I will report this as a bug later on this evening.

Blessed be!

There is a bug report. I didn't write it. I did write a dupe. Oh well, c'est la vie. The flag still lives...but apparently, not for long.

Blessed be!
