I just upgraded mplayer to the version in the title and now it doesn't work with smplayer. I've attached the error message from mplayer below. This worked in previous versions and I do have the "ass" use flag enabled for mplayer. Any ideas or other users with the same problem?

try mplayer -ass somevideo.file

you can disable ass support in smplayer
Preferences->Subtitles

When I disable ass subtitles, I get this when using smplayer.

Yes I have truetype and iconv enabled. I've reverted to the previous version of mplayer for now but these are the use flags I had enabled for mplayer.

That comment about the subtitles is also in the ebuild for mplayer-1.0_rc2_p28450.

I'm on ~amd64, and the 20090226.28734 version of mplayer works here with smplayer-9999-r2 from berkano overlay. Tho I'm surprised it doesnt work for you with 0.6.6_p2776. You can try enabling gif and lzo useflags for mplayer, as both yabbadabbadont and I have these enabled.

Well I tried recompiling again, I didn't change my use flags and now everything works. Thanks for the suggestion guys, I'm not sure what happened before, I guess something was messed up when compiling.

I just installed SMplayer for the first time and started getting this error. The problem with SMplayer is that it enables either ass or noass, but AT LEAST one or the other. I'm running mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20090919-r2 with freetype, iconv, unicode, ass, and djvu USE flags enabled. I also added +fontconfig (for freetype) and tried recompiling everything but I still get the error.

To add, I also found this in the mplayer configuration script output:

It seems that the new openal (1.9.563 in my case) is the problem. On your use flags for mplayer disable openal. Also there are reports that the 1.8 openal series work just fine.

Our bug seems to be a variation of this bug.
