Hey I just upgraded from 2.6.28 to 2.6.30 and now my sound is very very quiet. I initially though my sound wasn't working, but if I turn my speakers all the way up, and alsamixer settings on max, I can hear it. The problem is when turned all they way up the speakers should be deafening, like they are in 2.6.28. I have tried using alsaconf but it says it cannot find my sound card. Also I have alsa compiled into the kernel if that matters

In alsamixer, make sure that the ac97 channels are maxed out.

Thanks that solved it. I couldn't find an ac97 channel but I tried all of them and I found a VIA DXS channel. Max that channel out fixes the issue.

I have a similar issue as the original poster. After a kernel upgrade from 2.6.27 to 2.6.31, audio is very faint. If I max out all the levels in alsamixer, then the sound is distorted but still quiet. I can revert to the old kernel and the volume is normal. I look side-by-side at the kernel menuconfig (old v new) as well as other things (ls /dev, lsmod, etc). Nothing looks different. Any help is appreciated.

One suggestion is to make a list of all the channels in alsamixer in 2.6.27 and compare them to the channels in 2.6.31 I think I found some new channels that were initially set way too soft. Also try each channel individually resting it to it's original position if it doesn't change anything.

I have the same issue, but in alsamixer, it only lists Master and PCM. With both of these maxed and my speakers all the way up, I can get some normal, listenable volume, but my speakers buzz when I move my mouse.

Code:
# lspci |grep Audio
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
02:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc R700 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4000 Series]

The nVidia one is the one I actually use, and it appears to be the default card. I have the ATI one ready in case I start using HDMI.
Code:
<*>   Intel HD Audio  --->
[*]   Build ATI HDMI HD-audio codec support
[*]   Build NVIDIA HDMI HD-audio codec support
[*]   Enable generic HD-audio codec parser

Code:
# emerge -pv alsa-firmware alsa-headers alsa-tools alsa-utils alsa-plugins alsa-lib

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Total: 6 packages (3 new, 3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 5,501 kB

Would installing any of those three packages or adding/subtracting USE flags help? I'd also like to have my microphone jack available as an option, and it isn't right now.
