I just went to upgrade my pidgin IM client, and I see it's now including something called farsight, an audio/video framework, that pulls in a bunch of dependencies. I have no interest in having this functionality included, but there doesn't seem to be a USE flag for it. Does anyone know if it's possible to keep farsight out, or (as I suspect) do I just have to swallow something I don't want? :x

You just have to disable the flag "gstreamer".

So.... I followed this advice back in August, and it worked fine.... but now that I try to upgrade to 2.7.0, even though I have specificed -gstreamer in the USE flags, it still wants to pull in farsight as a dependency. Have they changed this so that it is no longer optional?

EDIT: Ah, I see they've actually removed that USE flag :x

Yep. The USE flag is gone, and not for any good reason. There is a trivial patch to fix this issue, but the maintainer has seen fit to force everyone to install gstreamer instead of applying it. See bugs 320167 and 319557 and the upstream bug.

It looks like upstream will fix this themselves in 2.7.1.

That's great but... will it then still depend on the Gentoo maintainer to put the USE flag back? If it is not reinstated, presumably we would still be in a position of having to install the audio/video dependencies?

According to the bug, it's now been fixed in 2.7.0-r1.
