I SERIOUSLY have to try to look up what kind of access to the overlay I have. I have something, unless someone killed it because I haven't use it in so long. I'm always working with audio in Gentoo so it makes sense for me to do updates to the overlay when I find (frequent) need for it.

So much on my plate, though. I'll certainly TRY to get to it at some point.

The 2007 -one is in this overlay and the 2009 -one was in the main portage tree and has been superseded by portaudio-19_pre20110317.

I'm looking for a way to always fetch audio stuff from pro-audio. It's very annoying to keep masking (and eventually unmasking..) packages because I dont want to get it from portage...

Any ideas?

Create a file called: /etc/portage/repos.conf and put this into it
Code:

[proaudio]
priority = -1001

This way you use portage tree just when the package is not in proaudio overlay.
Because portage tree has priority "-1000" and you make proaudio "-1001" . so the lowest one is used. You need a recent enough portage to use this feature.
Hope that helps.

Thanks! But its not working yet... it is still offering me to emerge seq24 and ardour from portage:

Code:
bacon@septuplet ~ $ sudo emerge -DNuva -j3 --keep-going world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     UD] media-sound/seq24-0.9.0 [0.9.2] USE="jack -lash" 0 kB [0]
[ebuild     U ] media-sound/ardour-2.8.11 [2.8.7] USE="lv2* nls -aubio% -austate% -debug -dmalloc% -fft_analysis% -fpu_optimization% -freesound% -liblo% -oldfonts% -surfaces% -sys-libs% -tranzport% -vst% -wiimote% (-altivec%) (-curl%) (-sse%*)" 3,245 kB [0=>1]

Total: 3 packages (1 upgrade, 1 downgrade, 1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 3,245 kB
Portage tree and overlays:
 [0] /usr/portage
 [1] /var/lib/layman/pro-audio

whats wrong? how do I check my portage version? I believe it's all updated...

Ups! try this in repos.conf:
Code:

[pro-audio]
priority = -1001

Notice in the previous post I mistakenly write "proaudio" instead of "pro-audio".
If it does not work, post the output of:
Code:

emerge --info --verbose

To check your portage version run this?
Code:

emerge --version

I realized i would need portage 2.2 to get that repos.conf working... so I did it, and now the priorities are being showed as I wanted:

Code:

proaudio
    location: /var/lib/layman/pro-audio
    masters: gentoo
    priority: -1001

gentoo
    location: /usr/portage
    sync: rsync://rsync1.br.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage
    priority: -1000

wavilen
    location: /var/lib/layman/wavilen
    masters: gentoo
    priority: 0

wirelay
    location: /var/lib/layman/wirelay
    masters: gentoo
    priority: 1

arcon
    location: /var/lib/layman/arcon
    masters: gentoo
    priority: 2

BUT it doesnt actually work when emerging, as it is still going for the portage package:

Code:
septuplet portage # sudo emerge -DNuva world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U  ] sys-apps/man-1.6f-r4 [1.6f-r3] USE="nls -lzma (-unicode%*)" LINGUAS="(-ru%)" 249 kB [1=>0]

Total: 4 packages (2 upgrades, 1 downgrade, 1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 3,494 kB
Portage tree and overlays:
 [0] /usr/portage
 [1] /var/lib/layman/arcon
 [2] /var/lib/layman/pro-audio

So, still, no good. help?

So, still, no good. help?

proaudio overlay has seq24 ver-0.9.0. So portage choose portage tree which has newer seq24 ver-0.9.2. Since seq24 is downgraded, I think you masked newer seq24, so remove mask. I think when proaudio overlay updates seq24 ebuild, it will be used. So if you don't have a problem with portage one, I suggest use it, since it is newer.

Actually pro-audio has the 0.8.7 version:

Code:
septuplet / # eix seq24
[U] media-sound/seq24
     Available versions:  0.8.7!m[1] 0.9.0 ~0.9.2 {devel-patches jack lash}
     Installed versions:  0.8.7!m[1](00:44:13 04/09/11)(jack -devel-patches -lash)
     Homepage:            http://www.filter24.org/seq24/
     Description:         Seq24 is a loop based MIDI sequencer with focus on live performances.

[1] "proaudio" /var/lib/layman/pro-audio

Tell me if I'm wrong: pro-audio may not always have the newest version os stuff, since the maintainers are always working on making it compatible with jack and so on. pro-audio isn't just about having audio packages, but also (PROfessionaly) stable versions altogether with other packages. That's why I'm worried about having a higher priority on pro-audio instead of portage.

I don't get it.. u want me to have the newest version of portage or the stable one?

=) thanks again!

The choice is left up to the user as to whether to use the latest stable or the absolute latest, as is the usual M.O. for Gentoo.

However, maintenance off the overlay is a bit behind. That's why I said earlier I should double check my access to the overlay, and maybe ask for a higher level, if they'll trust me with it, because I would gladly stay on top of things.

90% chance it's gcc-4.6 related, however I rebuilt @system about a week ago and jack hadn't started misbehaving until yesterday. I've tried a few versions of jack (the above is generated from 2.9999), rebuilding a bunch of libs conservatively and with an older compiler (direct deps, alsa stuff, dbus, glibc). When I see ".so" the first thing I do is run lafilefixer.

When I've poked around for a while and can't seem to find a solution, I rebuild my Gentoo DAW, although I've done this so often that I now rarely need to. If you do, follow the guide in my sig, and keep your Gentoo DAW separate from your every day computer, even if via a different partition you can boot into. My Gentoo DAW is also used for games, but everything else (office software and whatever) goes on another machine. It makes it easier to maintain, since sometimes you need certain system tweaks for audio that you do not want to mess with just to make something else work.

You're using the oldest available version. Try upgrading to 0.9.2 from Portage.

Since this is in Portage, we might as well drop it from the overlay... hint, hint. :P

On a tangent, I noticed that while it has jack support, it would be nice to give it jack midi support, since it doesn't show up in qjackctl's connections. Everything is available from within seq24, but it'd still be nice to see it in connections.

Hi, bacon. I updated the seq24 to the latest in proaudio overlay. Added a patch for your lash related segfault from upsteream.
Could you test it?

bacon. what is the output of these:
Code:

lsmod | grep seq
ls -l /dev/snd/seq

It seems something wrong with your audio setup.
Do you load the necessary modules within /etc/conf.d/modules file like this?
Code:

modules_2_6="${modules_2_6} snd-seq"
module_snd_seq_args_2_6=""

Midi keyboard for wine apps?

I've got Proteus VX installed in wine. Audio out is OK but Proteus can't "see" my midi keyboard. Anyone any idea
how to fix this, or at least help me take another little step towards figuring it out?

Alsa and jack drivers are selected in winecfg. I'm using wine 1.3.21. Proteus doesn't appear in either of the
midi/alsa tabs in jack even when a2jmidid is running.

If it's a VST, try running it through vsthost. That makes my VST's show up in qjackctl's connection window for me.

Do you mean the windows vsthost app in wine or a linux vst host?

I've tried the dssi-vst host in Rosegarden and Qtractor but no joy. In Rosegarden, the Proteus gui will open but it won't respond to any input. The Kontakt gui will also open, and it lets you select an instrument to load, but then it seems to lock up while the instrument is loading.

I'd also have tried Jost but the emerge failed.

Not sure what to try next.

I downloaded Proteus and took a look. What I found was that both my MIDI interface (an Emagic AMT8)
and my Korg MS-20 controller appeared in the MIDI tab in the Options menu.

Both of these are connected to the machine via USB.

What kind of MIDI keyboard do you have, and how is it connected to your computer?

What I meant earlier was: what happens when you open a terminal, go to the dir where ProteusVX.exe
is located, and do

Code:

vsthost ProteusVX.dll

(Yes, that's ProteusVX.dll, not ProteusVX.exe.)

I was actually unable to make that work, as the program froze within its window. I'm not sure how
much of that problem has to do with my specific setup, so I suggest you give it try.

But for using the .exe, I see that you should be able to access a MIDI controller from the options menu,
so tell me what your MIDI controller is and we'll see if we can figure it out.

Thanks for your help :) Hope you find a few useful sounds in the Proteus freebie.

Emu Xboard61 connected through USB and to soundcard midi-in (M-Audio 2496).

OK same here.

(1) I started off with a new .wine dir (renamed old one and ran wincfg to initialise a new one).

(2) Re-emerged wineasio and ran "$ regsvr32 wineasio.dll" in terminal as normal user, as advised in emerge notes.

(3) Re-emerged dssi-vst.

(4) Copied "ProteusVX.dll" to /usr/lib/vst/. Also copied as "Proteus.dll" since vsthost initially complained this didn't exist.

(5) Finally, cd to Proteus folder and run "$ vsthost ProteusVx.dll".

The Proteus gui launched and froze but, in the jack midi and alsa connections tabs, for the first time I can see entries for Proteus !! :)
I'm also running a2jmidid, and Jack with the midi "seq" option, if that is relevant.

Also for the first time, I can see a named entry for Emu Xboard and the M-Audio 2496 in the Proteus.exe midi
menu but there's a catch... If I activate the Alsa driver but not Jack I have no sound. If I use Jack driver and not
Alsa, I get sound just fine but no midi...! If they are both on together, sometimes one seems to be active,
sometimes the other, but I never get sound and midi at the same time.

In winecfg, the Alsa driver lists midi ins and outs but no audio. The jack driver lists audio ins and outs but no midi.
Is that normal?
