Hi!
I'm thinking about installing Gentoo. Before I do I would like to know a few things first.
I bought a Gentoo Linux 1.4 cd from the linux Emporium.
What I would like to know is:
Is it possoble to install Gentoo without being connected to the net?
If you do have to connect to the net- how long would I be connected for?
I'm still using dial up |

Is it just one cd or is it a 2 cd set?
If it's the 2 cd set, then you're in good shape... no need for a net connection.
If it's just the one, then it depends... you may or may not need a connection.
Basically, if you plug in the livecd and it starts booting with a pretty gnome logo and a little progress bar at the bottom, then you have the full blown 1.4 official release live cd.
If you look at the doc that it mentions after booting which is on the cd, or also here:
www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml
It gives the appropriate steps for installing without a net connection.
Be sure to read over it a couple of times if you've never done real linux before (real linux = slackware, LFS, etc..., easy linux= red hat, suse, mandrake, etc...).
If it's your first time - stick to the defaults, don't do anything weird... if you have a doubt, don't do it. Go through and get things running, THEN go back and tweak.
Hope that helps... let me know if you need more help! |

cd will make your life a whole lot easier... you just have to be a little patient... but if you're still stuck on a dialup, then you must still have some patience (^_^)
Go ahead and get your order in and head back to these forums if you need help getting things rolling!
One suggestion - you might search the forums for any special hardware in your system... that way, if there are issues, you'll know the answer before the problem occurs!
Enjoy the wonderful world of Linux! |

Hi!
Thanks for the replies It's the two cd set that I bought from the Linux Emporium. So if I have the two cd set- I won't need to be connected to the net? Sorry to keep asking silly questions. |

That's correct. However, you will still need to use your dialup connection if you want to download updates/new versions of the software you get in binary form on the CDs. This likely is not necessary very often if you don't care that much about having the absolute latest and greatest software at all times. It's certainly manageable to just keep your system secure by downloading only the software that has vulnerabilities, etc. |
