|
|
I already asked this on the ZDoom forum, but it's been a few days and I haven't gotten any help. Probably because I use Linux, so I'll ask here and hopefully somebody will know.
I've recently been playing ZDoom on my Gentoo machine, but I can't music to work. I installed ZDoom from their SVN repository. It requires Timidity++, which I installed through Portage and I added it to the default run level with rc-update. I can play Midi files with Timidity just fine, but it won't play midis in Doom. I have Timidity++ set as the midi player in Zdoom. All of the other sounds work though.
I looked at ZDoom's wiki for installing on Linux, and all it says is to install Timidity++ and it'll work, but it doesn't.
I also followed this Gentoo guide:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml#doc_chap4_sect2
And I'm using Alsa.
Anyone else have some experience with ZDoom?
Thanks. |

I'd suggest running the vavoom engine, with vavoom-music instead - no need for timidity |

Interesting. It works with ZDoom right?
Edit: I'm dumb. Vavoom is a Doom engine.
I'll give it a try. |

Vavoom does have working music, but I'm not too crazy about the "improved" graphics.
I think I can take off the use flags for vavoom-textures and vavoom-models and bring it back to vanilla graphics. |

I agree. Adding detail is good, but changing the style is bad. But, they are just files, so can be customized with a bit of effort. pk3 files are just like zip files. |

Bam, Chocolate Doom. Probably my favorite Doom port ever. And I've had no music issues, it just needs timidity. |
I did get Vavoom to not use the enhanced graphics. Just had to change some use flags.
Yeah, I tried Chocolate Doom before ZDoom, but I didn't know I needed Timidity at that time.
But Chocolate Doom is working now with music, and I can get it to run in a window; I could only get Vavoom in full screen.
Crap I forgot Chocolate Doom doesn't have mouse aim and WASD controls.
Whatever, I got Vavoom in a window now. |

Run "chocolate-setup". Turn on novert (Mouse configuration-> disable "Allow vertical mouse movement"), increase the speed a bit (mine's at 11, accel at 1, threshold at 10), configure the buttons. Go to configure keyboard, configure WASD.
Sure, there's no "aiming" in all directions like modern FPS games, but that's not how Doom did it anyway, you can still use the mouse to turn and point in the direction you want to fire. _________________ WARNING: this post may be filled with lies and/or extreme sarcasm.

my brother and i are experiencing strange freeze-ups when playing over the internet. at first i thought maybe it was my internet, but we have tried other, newer, games that work with no problems at all. basically, after a certain period of time, always random, the game just freezes. menu can still be accessed, you can look around, but everything else fails to work. you can type things in but they don't get displayed. i have tried everything, -netcode 1, -dup 1 - 9, -extratic, you name it. nothing seems to help. i've also noticed jolting when moving, like there's a tiny bit of lag and it jolts movement and other such things, but only for me. what's going on here? we both have the newest versions of gzdoom and zdoom, both do the same thing. _________________ Blues |
